Schedule B -- Form 1099-INT (EDWARD JONES): State ID for Box 8 in which the interest was earned should be entered for EDWARD JONES. If more than one state, see Help. State ID for Box 8. I don't understand just what TT is talking about.

Schedule B -- Form 1099-INT (EDWARD JONES): State ID for Box 8 in which the interest was earned should be entered for EDWARD JONES. If more than one state, see Help. State ID for Box 8. I don't understand just what TT is talking about.

The interest is tax-exempt - municipal bond - interest which is generally not subject to federal income tax. The interest is, however, taxable in most states with certain exceptions (some states try not to tax certain bonds issued in their state).

Regardless, the relevant information should appear on your 1099 from Edward Jones. If all else fails, you should be able to select "More Than One State" from the dropdown list.

Go back to the Interest on 1099-INT section. Go all the way through the screens and then scroll down when you see the dropdown box.

After clicking more than one state, it prompted me to put in the states, which wound up doubling the total amount of tax exempt interest.

So I removed the total from box 8, and then it challenged me because box 13 (bond premium on tax exempt bonds) is greater than 0 (or the amount in box 8).

I guess I'll just remove the bond premium amount.

I was wrong.

Easy Step did not help me.

I went "to the form" instead and did the following

  1. restored the 1099-INT box 8 tax exempt interest total
  2. on the FORM, it then asks
    1. how much of that was for a state in which I'm a resident and filing taxes (I entered that)
    2. Use "XX" to indicate the total for all the other states in which I'm not a resident (the balance)
  3. With that, I went back and restored the Box 13 bond premium amount

There were no longer any errors, and as my friend used to say, "Bob's your uncle".
