If you are entering a W-2, leave boxes 15 thru 20 blank (empty) if you live in a state without a personal income tax. If the program is still giving you an error for the State ID, delete the W-2 and re-enter manually.
You are not required to enter a drivers license or state ID in order to e-file a federal return. It just adds some security. You are allowed to skip that screen.
Are you using a phone to prepare your tax return? It might seem trendy to do that when you see it on the commercials, but in reality, the screen is small and you cannot see what you are doing. It is too easy to miss important things. Your tax return is too important to risk messing up by preparing it on a phone. Get to a computer or some other device with a larger screen. Messing up your tax return and spending months sorting out the mess will not be “cool.”
thank you for your response! i am aware that i can skip the screen, however when i do skip that information, turbotax still doesnt let me finish filing because i havent filled out my state id information, even though its blank on my w-2 and turbotax states that i dont need it. however, i dont have a state id to input, because i live in a state with no income tax.
It is possible you started a state return somehow in your return preparation by mistake. If you can log into your account on a computer, you can see if there is a state listed and delete it. You will see the state return option on your left menu bar when you are working on your return, once you click on it to enter things, there will be an option to delete the return.
Wait----are you asking about a state ID on a W-2? I thought you were talking about entering a state ID card to e-file.
You need to just leave boxes 15, 16 and 17 blank for a W-2.
so, the box on my w-2 where the state id would go is blank. therefore, when i am filing through turbotax, i am leaving that part blank as well. the problem is: the turbotax app is not allowing me to finalize my e-file process because i have left the state id blank on the form, but i dont need to put a state id since i dont have one and my state does not do income tax. basically, im doing everything correctly, but turbotax is not allowing me to finalize my taxes. i have updated the app, deleted and re-entered my w-2 manually, and it still will not work. this is very frustrating, because i have another w-2 with the same blank box for state id, and turbotax did not require me to fill in the state id for that, but for some reason is requiring it for my second w-2. i dont know what to do about it because i live in texas and therefore have no state id to provide to turbotax.
You have already done my first suggestion: delete and re-add. Any chance that you have other forms like a 1099 that has state tax withholding on it?
Can you tell us the exact message you get when you try to e-file?
