Is anyone running into this issue that's not for a child's/dependent's return?
Hi! I had them call be back and it took almost 2 hours for them to contact me. They were the ones who pointed me to this thread, so I'm really hoping they are already working on a fix quickly
I spent almost 3 hours on the phone today for this issue. This includes waiting to talk to someone, explaining and showing the issue over screen sharing, waiting while the support person put me on hold to talk to someone else or do something else, and calling in a second time to get clarification on why the case created for me was later closed.
The first person I talked to said that this issue hasn't been reported before and there wasn't anything currently in the pipeline about a fix for the issue. So they created an investigation record for this. The way this was described to me sounded like an internal bug report for someone to look into further. They also gave me my case number, which turned out to be the same as the support ID I used to call in about the issue (when going thru the steps at https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/contact/ to call in about an issue, a support ID is generated to reference when calling in).
About an hour later, I received an email saying that my case was closed and to take a survey for it. I was confused about this so I called in again to ask what was the deal with this. It turns out that cases are closed whenever a call or interaction with a customer is complete (i.e. when my prior phone call ended). It doesn't mean that the issue I made the call for is resolved. I checked again that the investigation that was created before during the prior call was still open.
The investigation number that got created for the issue is INV12109. If others call in and reference this, it may help with letting them know it's a widespread issue affecting many people and push them to fix it sooner.
What they told you about this being a new problem is blatantly false. I spent two hours with customer support on Sunday discussing this error. The young lady went back and forth with me, consulted with other colleagues and supervisors and had me try numerous approaches to getting the darned residency box checked. I explicitly pointed out three threads in the Intuit community pages that discussed this issue and she pulled those up and acknowledged them, so she and her supervisor were aware that multiple customers were experiencing the same problem. (We had this time to chat because she had asked me to force-update Turbo Tax - even though it ran an update when I launched the program on Saturday.)
When we ended, her supervisor had recommended that I uninstall and reinstall the program. I said "forget it" and told her that I would wait to see if this resolved in a week and, if not, would mail in my son's state return. For what it's worth, I was able to e-file his federal return despite the error in the State worksheet, and just left the State filing pending for now.
I found the fix...at least for me. I stopped using Turbo Tax program online. I download the Turbo Tax program onto my laptop and then the actual question on California form regarding principal residence actually gets ask. I was finally able to e-file my forms after 6+ hours trying to figure this out. Give it a try. Hope it works for you.
I think a lot of people here running into this issue are already running the installed version of Turbotax. I myself am using Turbotax Deluxe for Windows.
I haven't tried deleting the return and starting over from scratch. Wanted to avoid doing this so I don't to re-enter all the data but maybe I'll try this later if Intuit doesn't fix this soon.
I did the download and the same error happened to me.....BUT good news! I just saw the following updated 2 hours ago...
"Some TurboTax CD/Download users are reporting an error with their California Information worksheet. The error tells users they must select YES or NO when asked if the address is their principal residence. This applies to California resident filers only.
We're working to resolve this issue and anticipate it'll be fixed on March 5."
So hopefully it gets fixed both on the download and the online versions 😉
After I updated TurboTax (desktop) with the CA updates released on 3/4, the issue was resolved and I was able to check the principal residence box.
The issue is fixed for me too after updating the software today.
Unfortunately, waiting for this fix cost an extra $5 on the state e-file fee. Just realized it increased from $19.99 to $24.99 starting on March 1.
