part year resident tax filing

Hi, I work for a consultancy company in NY and they sent me to MA and IL for some time last year. I have two questions:

(1) they issued three W-2, one for each state. How do I enter three W-2 in turbotax?

(2) The W-2 for MA and IL show only that state's portion of state wages & tips in box 16. However, the NY W-2 shows the entire amount in box 16. Am I not double paying NY state tax for the portion that's already covered in MA/IL W-2?

thanks

Hi @atulagarwal_92128

Great questions.  You may add as many W-2's into TurboTax as needed.

Follow these steps to add additional W-2s:

  1. Open (continue) your return if you don't already have it open
  2. Search for W-2 and select the Jump to link in the search results
  3. On the Your W-2 info so far screen, select Add another W-2
  4. Enter the information from the new W-2 on the following screens

You will not be double taxed for NY.  NY is your home state and requires all income is properly reported there and will be allocated to the other states appropriately.  TurboTax will perform all of the calculations accordingly if you enter the W-2s correctly.

Do not worry NY is an expert at this.  After you have completed the Federal input, TurboTax will ask to prepare your state returns.  You MUST prepare NY return last if that is your home state.  So choose MA or IL.  you will be filing Non-Resident returns for IL and MA.   Once you enter the state return, TurboTax will prompt you to add another state.  All of the relevant information will automatically be transferred to each state.  Remember NY is last.

You can delete your state return by following these instructions.

Note: If you've already paid your TurboTax state fees or registered your free version with your state return attached, you can't delete your state return.

  1. Sign in and open a section of your return
  2. From the menu, select State and then select Continue on the Let's get your state taxes done right screen
  3. On the Status of your state returns screen, select Delete next to your state, then answer Yes

If you’ve already paid your state fees, you can’t delete your return, but you can start over by selecting Start Over next to your state return on the Status of your state returns screen.

Delete your Illinois and Massachusetts W-2s. Those are supplements to your main New York W-2. Rather than creating an IL and MA W-2, add the state information in lines 15-20 on your NY W-2 so it has three state lines – NY, IL, and MA.

  1. Type w-2 in Search (magnifying glass) in the top right corner
  2. Select Jump to w-2
  3. On “Your W-2 info so far,” delete your IL and MA W-2s
  4. Edit your NY W-2
  5. Below NY, tap +Add another state and add additional state (and local, if applicable) lines for IL and MA
  6. Go through each state again to make sure everything is correct.

Other state tax credit

Your title says “part-year resident tax filing.”  However, it sounds as if you were a full-year resident of NY. In that case, file nonresident returns for IL and MA. New York will give you credit for tax paid to IL and MA.

TurboTax CD/Download should update your credit amounts automatically but select EDIT next to each state in the “Other State Tax Credit Summary” to verify the income being taxed and the amount of tax paid.

Hi Cynthiad66, thank you for your prompt and very helpful response. I have another follow-up question. I had started filling out the NY state return. Is there an easy way to delete it and start over?

You can delete your state return by following these instructions.

Note: If you've already paid your TurboTax state fees or registered your free version with your state return attached, you can't delete your state return.

  1. Sign in and open a section of your return
  2. From the menu, select State and then select Continue on the Let's get your state taxes done right screen
  3. On the Status of your state returns screen, select Delete next to your state, then answer Yes

Hi Cynthia,

Your instructions were very good but I ran into a situation while trying to file my return. Per turbotax, since two of the three W-2s had no amount in box 1, my federal return is ineligible for electronic filing. NY, on the other hand, requires software-prepared tax returns to be filed electronically. Turbotax wouldn't let me file the NY return electronically since the federal return needs to be filed on paper. How do I file the federal or NY return electronically in this situation?

thank you,

Atul
