We’re working on completing our State Income Tax Return, got to the point where Turbo Tax asked us to verify our ID, we gave it direct deposit info and then it asked us to enter the value on line 11 from our PA-40 2019 PA Income Tax Return. Our amount due went from $3 to almost $2,000 which is clearly wrong and we can’t seem to undo this!
In an effort to correct this we deleted the whole PA return but it’s still saying we owe $2,000. How the heck do we undo this and what’s the way to proceed with finishing our return?!

Deleting your return should clear your data.
In the Pennsylvania section, go to You’ve Finished Your Pennsylvania Return.
Update Underpayment Penalty.
Select YES to Do you want to let Pennsylvania calculate the penalty for you? There should be no underpayment penalty on a $3 balance due.
If that doesn’t work:
Hi ErnieSO, thanks for your help.
1. We were able to get to the "You've Finished Your Pennsylvania Return" section but could not find "Update Underpayment Penalty". Where should we see that?
2. We tried your second suggestion but that didn't change the amount due.
3. TT doesn't say that we have an underpayment penalty - "No underpayment penalty". It's now saying we owe $1,913. It doesn't seem to be recognizing the payments to the state that we made in 2019 or 2020. It's saying we only paid $1,200 in taxes which is not correct. We paid almost 3 times that much.
It also says "We noticed that you didn't make any Pennsylvania Estimated tax payments on your Federal Return".
And finally, just to make this fun - we know that the Feds never got our mailed return last year due to Covid shutdowns. We just resubmitted our Federal return to them as instructed last week.
Thank you again for you help - we really appreciate it ErnieSO.

The state estimated tax payments must be included in the estimated tax section when completing your federal return for your state to recognize these payments.
Ok, it seems that the problem was with my wife's payroll company, Paychex. They mistakenly withheld state taxes for NJ AND PA, which they should NOT have done, and this caused problems with our return. She was able to get it sorted out after an hour and half phone call with Turbo Tax and we now have to file a paper return. Paychex apparently also made the same mistake in 2020 so we'll have the same problem next year. Oh boy! Something to look forward to.
Thank you everyone for your help, we greatly appreciate it.
Best regards,
John
