A SSN is only 9 digits.  Is there a letter at the beginning?  Leave the letter off.

wrong, its 10 digits - I've been giving a 10 digit number federally and to immigration the past 2 months. Old SSN from 1992 been unused since 1996. Please do research before you answer a question this important. Thank you

I have a Social Security Card dated 1992 - and the number is 10 digits long perhaps they have changed this. Thanks for the links

See answer below. SSN's have never been 10 digits (and mine is a lot older than 1992.).  Medicare ID numbers are the SSN, plus a letter.
