Multi-State Tax Filing

My wife and I reside in Delaware, and both work full time in Maryland, so I know we need to file in Maryland. My wife also works with the Army National Guard in New Jersey, and it requires a filing there was well, my question is more in regards to the order I should do the state returns if I use TurboTax, do I start with Maryland since it is where we work full time follow by New Jersey before doing Delaware so that if there are any credit items I need I get those first?

Yes, in general, you should work through your non-resident returns first and then complete your resident return.  

 

You may be able to claim a credit for taxes paid to another state on your resident return.  If that non-resident return has already been completed, then TurboTax will be able to transfer the appropriate information for you to claim the credit.

I'm sort of in the same situation but the answer should come from Turbo Tax because the steps used in the software changes every year.

I live in PA and work in DE. I've been filing for years in both states however this year Turbo Tax asks for the tax charged by each state. I can easily find DE on my W2 but not PA because PA was never deducted or estimated.

Why does Turbo tax (Fed +1 state) does it this progression. I've already filed in DE but I stuck with Turbo Tax doing my PA tax preparation. Also, how do I find the PA tax amount?

You should always complete your non-resident state first, so in your case DE. This is because you may qualify for taxes paid to another state in your resident state.

 

Sounds like you did PA first, so TurboTax doesn't know what your tax liability in DE is. When it is asking for your tax in each state, it is not asking for withholdings, it is asking for your calculated tax liability on your tax return.

 

I would delete both state returns and start the states over, starting with DE.
