I am domiciled in California, have lived in Oregon for more than 6 months, and work in Washington. Help!

I have earned no income from Oregon, I have a California drivers license, car registration, bank statements. I have nothing in Oregon other than a month to month lease and utility bills. All of my income is from Washington. Am I a double resident of Oregon and California, am I a resident and non-resident? I am so confused.

It depends. Are you planning on going back to California and in Oregon for only a temporary purpose? Do you have close connections in California? Since your residence is usually the place where you have the closest ties, you should compare your ties to California with your ties in Oregon. If so, you are likely a California resident.

Since you have a California driver's license, car registration, and your bank statements are still addressed to a residence in California, if you also have close connections in California and plan on going back to California, then you are a California resident.

Furthermore, do you make all your money in the state of Washington or do you telecommute from Oregon? If you telecommute, then you would likely file a resident California return and a nonresident Oregon return since you made your money telecommuting from the state of Oregon. If you made your money in Washington, then you would file a resident California return. Washington does not collect income tax on individuals.

Hi @LenaH ,

Thank you for replying! My entire family is in California, I just applied to 6 grad schools there and plan on attending in California because I get in-state tuition and have intentions of going back. I also applied to 1 grad school in Oregon and 2 in Washington but I won't be attending because it costs 3x as much. I make all of my money physically in the state of Washington and do no telecommuting. Just confirming I don't have to file for Oregon as well.

Thanks again

You do not have to file an Oregon return if you made no money in Oregon because you did not receive any money from "Oregon sources".
