How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

I tried removing the specific state update routine, e.g., wriiperStateIS.msi, as well as that state's corresponding registry keys -- TurboTax 2022 would still try to reinstall that state's module and subsequent updates.

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

I see a long string of messages related to state updates that are no longer needed. I realize that you are not charged for the updates but that is not the point. Why can't TT fix the issue rather than the customers attempting to find a work around solution? The updates waste my time and attempting to find a solution through the community is also a waste of my time.

In that long string of messages is the process necessary to resolve the issue.  I agree that it would be better if TT would correct the problem, but there is a solution.

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

There were at least 2 different methods listed and one of them I tried and it didn't work.  It seems like you could have put in a link to the method that you think will work.

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

I am going to try this next year assuming that TT hasn't fixed it and I still decide to use TT.  I have tried deleting the state files, editing the registry, etc. w/o luck.

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

I assume that you KNOW that the linked article does not fix the issue this thread is talking about.  We are tired of TT trying to update states that we no longer use or need.  I'm sure the linked "fix" will remove the unwanted state from the program, but will NOT stop it from updating every time you load TT.

Just to make sure that I knew what I was talking about- I just went into TT, Forms and the only state there was the one that I use.  I ran the updater and it showed it updating my state and then 2 states that I no longer use or want.  TT did not place them in forms, but did waste my time updating states that are unwanted.  There should be a TT FIX for this BUG.

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

To Expert TT Employee: This only removes a state return that is in progress. Old states that are no longer used do not show up. So, more time will be wasted by users waiting for updates of states no longer used.

No thanks, I will just complain until TT gets it fixed.  I read another post in this thread about somebody who contacted Support, jumped thru hoops, and then was told that there wasn't a fix.  If Support wants to send me a link to or instructions for the fix that would be great.

I agree with Steve😁

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

There is a sure-fire way to fix this problem. Switch to another tax software program next year. That's what I am going to do. I thought I had solved my problem by deleting all unused states in the program directory, yet lo and behold, they showed up again during updating. BTW why do I have to jump through hoops to avoid updating. I don't want updates after my taxes are filed because I want to preserve the program the way it was when I filed in case there are problems. I want to be able to show it was TurboTax's fault. A simple "Update, yes or no" would suffice.

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

@cparke3  I have sort of the opposite problem:  I'm trying to enable the state return for MA and VA for 2018 (I paid for them back in 2019).

My state is asking me to file a missing 2018 filing (its beyond 3 years due to special circumstances -- I'm a veteran).  So I re-installed my copies of 2017 and 2018 Turbotax Home & Business.  2017 let me download the state forms yesterday (Feb 23, 2023), but the 2018 TurboTax would not download the state forms that it automatically needs since the return was created using those state forms in 2019 when they were downloadable. Why did I reinstall? Well, my previous computer died.  So now I cannot complete the .tax2018 state return nor carry over that data to the .tax2019 and subsequent returns.  Is there anyway to get my 2018 TurboTax state files downloaded and working?  Again, 2017 downloaded fine, as did 2019 yesterday.

Ok, so I removed the windows os harddrive from the broken computer and tried to swap it into another computer, but it would not boot.  Different PC, so that was a long shot anyhow. Yet the hard drive and all the files and folders are intact. I believe it has an installed TT 2018 on it with the MA and VA state forms enabled.  I want to transfer those forms and any registry permissions to the new install.

I am wondering if I install TT 2018 onto the windows laptop and then copy all the TT 2018 folders and files, overwriting any duplicates from broken computer's hard drive, and then add or modify windows registry settings, I may be able to get the state returns to work on the new install.  Let me know if you follow my logic and if you think it may work.

Then the question is what registry keys do I need to add.  Can I analyze the broken laptops registry keys for TT and add those to the new install PC?  How would I know if I got them all?  Thanks for any help.

How do I remove other installed states from the desktop version of TurboTax?

The needed registry keys should all be under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Intuit\TY18\NEEDEPERSTATES

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Intuit\TY18\PREFILLPERSTATES
