How do I adjust my SC taxable income?

I moved from FL to SC and indicated this on the Federal info along with dates and state info.  When filing the SC state return it is trying to tax all of my income as if I lived there the entire year.  I did file a part year resident so it should have pulled the info from the federal correctly but it has not.  I looked for a way to indicate the Florida income on the SC return and it does not adjust anything since FL has not state income tax. help

How do I adjust my SC taxable income?

South Carolina does not have a true part-year return.  Rather, they either will tax you as a nonresident or as a full-year resident.  If they tax you as a full-year resident, all of your income is taxed in South Carolina, but then they give you a credit for the tax you pay in the state where you came from.  This doesn't work for you, because you lived in Florida which has no state tax.  Therefore, you will want to choose the Nonresident option.  This way guarantees that South Carolina only taxes the income you made while working in South Carolina.

If you cannot find this option when you select the part-year resident, then start the state return over and select nonresident so that your Florida income is excluded from the South Carolina return.  (One caveat:  South Carolina may still pretend that all of the income is taxable, and then prorate the tax to the percentage of income earned only in South Carolina.  This is still less tax than if all of the income is actually considered taxable, which is what happens when you use method 1 described above).

How do I adjust my SC taxable income?

Thank you!  Will give this a try.  By claiming non resident this will not effect my property tax to be taxed as a non resident will it? and will it effect receiving SC instate tuition since we are choosing the non resident option even though we are indeed SC residents?

How do I adjust my SC taxable income?

I have the exact same problem. If you select Resident, as you are, Turbo Tax allocates all your Florida Income to the State of South Carolina for the entire year. If you select Non-Resident there is no income reported or allocated to the State of South Carolina that was earned or unearned. This cannot be correct as you are a legal resident of South Carolina for part of the year. I wonder if that will trigger an audit by the State?

In addition, in completing Schedule A deductions for a Sales tax Deduction, Turbo Tax wants to know what County in South Carolina do you reside in order to calculate the correct Sales Tax deduction. I moved to Beaufort County and Turbo Tax does not even list Beaufort County as a County in South Carolina. Still trying to determine how to report this problem to Turbo Tax. Any suggestions?

How do I adjust my SC taxable income?

If you lived only part of the year in South Carolina you will file as a Part-Year Resident there.

Indicate this in the My Info/Personal Info section in TurboTax.

In the Part-Year Resident return, you will be asked to allocate your income to South Carolina, if it is not clear from a W-2 or 1099 form how much belongs to South Carolina.

Click this link for more info on How to File a Part Year Resident Return.

On the South Carolina County dropdown list for Sales Tax, scroll all the way down to 'Other Locality'

On the next screen, you can enter the Sales Tax Rate for Beaufort County.
