HICR-001 Attach a binary file

I get the following error code: HICR-001 - If Line Income Tax paid to other state or country [IncTaxPaidToOtherStateOrCntry] is greater than zero on the Schedule CR, then binary attachment(s) with the file name beginning with 'TaxPaidAnotherState' must be present.

How do I attach this binary file?  I added the documents to my "Documents" section in TurboTax Online, but I am not confident they were transmitted.  I saw some other posts that mentioned that attaching files is not possible (but the error message seems to indicate otherwise).  Is there something else I should be doing or am I good?

I've had the same issue for a week and have spoken to two TurboTax specialists on the phone. In my most recent call today, I was told this was a bug and to file by mail.

This is unacceptable: we've paid for the software, it's clearly a bug, and TurboTax should make the appropriate change to allow for the attaching of another file (in my case, another state return).

To clarify, I haven't used the "My Documents" functionality. It seems to me like this should not be necessary; TurboTax is simply failing to attach the other states' returns to the Hawaii one like it should.

The fee for Turbo Tax is to use the program, not an e-filing fee. If customer support advised to file by mail, this is the way you will need to file.

On the Hawaii state income tax return, are you reporting a Credit for income tax paid to other states and countries?

The TaxBook page HI-9 states:

I wonder whether the "attached binary file" that is referred to is the non-resident state tax state tax return for which you are qualifying for the  Credit for income tax paid to other states and countries?

What is the non-resident state tax return that you are filing?  Please clarify.

HICR-001 Attach a binary file

I just received the same error message for my rejected 2023 Hawaii tax return:

HICR-001 - If Schedule CR Line 11 [Income Tax Paid To Other State Or Country] is greater than zero, then binary attachment(s) with the file name beginning with 'TaxPaidAnotherState' must be present

The tax return for the other state, North Dakota, is included in the PDF of the 2023 Hawaii tax return that I saved for record just before filing.  So, it appears that the required information is included in the Hawaii tax return, but I don't know what TurboTax actually transmits to the state.  What can be done to fix this problem and successfully e-file my Hawaii tax return?

Note that Intuit has already charged me $25 for e-filing the Hawaii tax return.  I'd prefer to e-file, but if the response from TurboTax is to file by mail, then do I get a refund?

Is there an amount on HICR, Line 11?    Are you trying to e-file all 3 returns together (Federal, NC, and HI)?   @Ewa4

The fee you paid was to use the software to prepare the return, it is not an e-filing fee.

Some info on e-filing state returns

@DawnC,

First, the fee that I paid for e-filing is indeed a fee for e-filing.  I paid $50 plus tax for e-filing my two state returns (HI and ND; not NC, as you incorrectly stated).  Since I was unable to e-file my HI state return, per my request, Intuit has already refunded the associated fee ($25 plus tax).  For your information, so that you don't incorrectly repeat what you said to me to others, the purchase price of TurboTax is what we pay to use the software to prepare the returns.  There are plenty of additional fees from Intuit when you have multiple state returns.  For me, fees for an additional state return plus e-filing the two state returns.

Regarding the actual issue, last week, I spent over 2 hours on the phone with multiple TurboTax specialists.  They were nice, but unable to resolve the problem.  In my opinion, this is a programming bug which needs to be corrected by TurboTax.  Based on this thread, this issue has been around for at least two years.  Based on my conversations with the TurboTax specialists, the HICR-001 error code doesn't even show up on their list of error codes.  This bug needs to be bumped over to the TurboTax programmers, because it's not a "tax" problem.  TurboTax seems to be unable to e-file HI returns that include a credit for taxes paid to other states (Line 11 on Schedule CR), because the other state's return isn't attached to the HI return in a way that the HI tax system recognizes and accepts it.  So, HI rejects the return, even though it does appear that the HI return includes the other state's return.  Based on the error description, the other state’s return simply isn’t named correctly.

Regarding your questions, of course there is an amount on HICR, Line 11.  Otherwise, there would not be a problem.  Yes, I attempted to e-file all three returns together.  However, only the Federal and ND returns were accepted.  Since TurboTax was unable to resolve the issue, I have printed and snail mailed our HI return.
