When I start the state section in the Free File program, the "Prepare State" screen has no information on it, other than the titles for the "Your State Returns" screen in the top middle and the "State Review" screen in the top right, but it does have a "Continue" button. When I click the "Continue" button, that brings me to the "Your State Returns" screen. On that screen, it also has the same titles as the previous screen as well as a boxed graphic that starts out titled "Transferring from federal to state" and then lists below Personal Information, Income, Deductions, and Credits, with progress bars moving from left to right. Once the progress bars move all the way to the right, the graphic title changes to "Transfer Complete" but the screen does not provide a "Continue" button or indicate any other way to advance. If you click on the "State Review" screen at the top right, you reach a screen that has a title that says "Choose a State" and says that you haven't chosen a state to prepare. Select "Choose a State" to start a state return. In the bottom right of the screen are two buttons. One says "Choose a State" and the other says "Do Not Prepare State Return."
If I select "Choose a State," it brings me back to the "Your State Returns" screen and after the progress bars have fully run to the right, still doesn't provide a chance to pick a state, a continue button or any other indication to advance. As far as I can tell, I am not doing anything wrong, but this seems to be a problem with your program. I tried calling the support number, but it was just automated advice. Please let me know how I can get the state portion to work correctly.
Thank you for your assistance.
Best regards,
Michelle Mattis

Which state do you need? Not all have a state income tax and some (such as NH and TN) only tax certain types of investments.
I live in NJ - that's not the issue.
