Filing issues

When I go to file my Michigan returns I get this and it stops me from e-filing. Is it just a form availability issue and if so does anyone know when this will be available?

If you are using the TurboTax Online edition, go back to your federal return and go through the screens for your 1099-R.   The program has been updated with Form 8915-E, to remove the early withdrawal penalty for early retirement plan distributions because of COVID-19.

Then go back to your Michigan return.  After reviewing the return you should now be able to e-file it.

If you are using TurboTax CD/Download, the update should be available later today (2/25/2021).  You will be prompted to download any updates available when you open the program.  You can also update the program while you have it open by following these steps:

  1. Click on the Online link in the black bar at the top of the page.
  2. Click on Check for Updates.
  3. TurboTax will download and install any updates available.  If there aren't any updates, you will receive the message "Your software is up to date."

I'm using the online IRS edition and did exactly that and I still seem to be getting that screen and only for the Michigan part of it.

Also in MI. Have the same problem.

Tried from two devices, deleted 1099-R and entered it again. It seems to be happening to multiple users. Is this an issue on the backend? Is it a state form issue?

That link doesn’t help.  Still not working.

This link is not helpful, and this issue has not been resolved. When can we expect to be able to file our taxes???

Still not working here. Anything for anyone else?

Per the forms availability schedule, the form just became available today, February 26. If using TurboTax Online the system will automatically be updated.  If you are using TurboTax Desktop, try to run a manual update of your software to see if that will load the new forms. If that does not resolve the issue, wait until tomorrow and re-run the update as we do not know the exact time the system will update the forms.

Still doesn’t work for Michigan.  Can anyone provide an update on when this will be corrected?

Still not working on my end too.

Since Form 8915-E was added a few days ago, the issue should be resolved. Since it is not in your case, then the program is not fully updating. Here are some ways to force the update and move forward:

  • Close out of your program and close out of the browser using TurboTax Online.
    • Check for updates in TurboTax CD/Download from the menu line--depending on the level of your program, this will be under Help or Online.
  • Use Chrome when the browser is re-opened.
    • Try using an incognito browser if you are already using Chrome
  • Clear cache & cookies (Ctrl + Shift + Del); In Chrome, use the Basic tab for at least 7 days
  • Delete Form 1099-R following these steps:
    • From the left menu, select Tax Tools.
    • Select Tools.
    • Scroll to Delete a Form.
    • Scroll to Form 1099-R and select Delete and Delete Selected Form and Continue.
    • Refresh your browser window.
  • Return to the program and search for 1099-R. Select the Jump to link in the search results.
    • Verify that the questions were answered after entering Form 1099-R:
      • Where is your distribution from?
        • Pension/IRA distributions received before retirement age / None of the above
      • Do any of these situations apply to you?
        • I took out this money because of a qualified disaster (includes COVID-19)
      • Continue through the rest of the questions before returning to your state return and go through any questions.

I just tried all of that. I get the new questions and it allows me to waive the 10% tax. The problem comes when I get to the final check before e-file. It asks me to correct my number for distribution of 401k to match up with federal and it does because it was all imported. I click to advance it and it won't allow me to and up top it says something about letting me know when it's ready, which it should be. It just keeps sending me in this endless loop. @KathrynG3

You can send us a diagnostic file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. This will allow us to open a copy of your return.

If you would like to do this, follow these steps:

  1. From the left menu, select Tax Tools.
  2. Then select Tools
  3. Select Share my file with Agent and OK
  4. Then, you will get a pop-up with a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and can help diagnose the issue.
