In 2022 my daughter was a full time student, will be claimed as a dependent on our tax return, had a full time job and also worked as an independent contractor - but received no 1099. She has some expenses (like mileage).

Which product is best to use to cover all of this?

I called in and was told just the Basic product, but I don't think that's right.

If she has self-employed income and expenses to claim against this income, she'll need to use TurboTax Deluxe or TurboTax Self-Employed (Online) if you have expenses to deduct or TurboTax Home and Business (CD/Download).

As she did not receive a form 1099-NEC, she'll report the self-employed income under Other self-employed income.

    • In business income, just under Type of Income, click on Add Income for this work
    • On the next page, click on the radio button next to Other Self-employed Income
    • Click Continue to enter your income received in cash, checks or bank transfers.

To claim expenses, she can follow the instructions in this TurboTax Help article.

She can use the IRS Free File Program (if her AGI will be under $73K ) which is free to file both a federal and state tax return.
