When you set up a scheduled direct debit it will go through you would not need to mail the payment. During non-peak times, funds are usually withdrawn on the payment date you specify, assuming your e-filed return has already been accepted (received) by the IRS.
Due to high e-filing volume it can take a little longer to process the payment and then it will take your bank another few days to post the debit to your account.
No worries; as long as you selected April 18, 2017 (or earlier) as your payment date, you won't get penalized for a late payment.
If it has been more than 10 days since your Federal tax return was accepted and you don't see the debit you can contact IRS e-file Payment Services at 1-888-353-4537 for assistance in confirming the scheduled debit date.

I scheduled payments on 4/14/2021 for State and Federal. State withdrawal has gone through, but the Federal withdrawal has not been posted as of 4/16/2021. Both returns were accepted within hours of filing them on 4/13/2021. If there is a Delay in TurboTax or the Federal Govt making the transfer, either of them should be sending out emails saying this is normal and not to worry. Anything less is irresponsible. I would expect if there are penalties and fees that TurboTax would be liable for any hiccups. in this process.
There seems to be some delay with the IRS withdrawing the funds. Please be aware that this year you have until May 17th to pay your balance due. Also, there will be no penalties or interest if the IRS failed to make the debit on time as long as the request was done correctly on a timely filed return.
Usually, the IRS will withdraw the amount on the day you selected. If that date happens to fall on a weekend or federal holiday, the funds are typically withdrawn the next business day. Please see When will my tax payment go through? for additional information.
Also, you can view your balance and check your payment activity at IRS Paying Your Taxes.
How long of a delay are we talking?
I set mine to withdraw on the 7th of April and it still hasn’t gone through.
Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
