Why doesn't the 1040 EIC form show my child is disabled although I selected that he is permanently disabled as I answered questions in the Turbotax program?

Wondering why the program didn't mark it on the form and if this changes the credit for him in any way.

Do I get a credit or deduction if my child is disabled?

If your child is older than 12 and you need to pay someone to take care of him while you work, you can say he is disabled and you can still get the childcare credit on your federal return.   Or if he is 19 or older you may still be able to claim him as a qualifying child dependent on your federal return.

Aside from those things, there is no federal tax advantage to saying that your child is disabled.   Your state tax laws might be different.

You have not mentioned the age of your disabled child.   Is the child older than 18?  Or older than 23 if not a student?   You do not get "extra" EIC for saying that a qualifying  child is disabled.     Earned income credit is shown on line 27 of your Form 1040.

It depends. First, double check the selections you made in the 'Personal Info' Section to be sure you indicated your child was disabled. Next review the qualifications in the links below to be sure you do qualify.

Qualifying Child: To count as a qualifying child for EIC, your child must have a valid Social Security number (not an ITIN).

They must also:

  • Be your child (including legally adopted), stepchild, eligible foster child, sibling, half-sibling, step-sibling, or a descendant of any of them (for example, your grandchild or niece); and
  • Be permanently and totally disabled OR under the age of 19 as of December 31, 2024 (under 24 if a full-time student) and younger than you (or your spouse, if filing jointly); and
  • Have lived with you (or your spouse, if filing jointly) for more than half the year in the United States (unless you were in the military); and
  • Not file jointly with their spouse unless they weren't required to file, but did so anyway to claim a tax refund.

Next, it's a good idea to print your tax return before you file so you can review it. You have access to all forms when you choose to print your return in TurboTax Online/Mobile.  However you are required to pay before printing, but do not have to file until you are ready.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop you can switch to Forms and review all forms and worksheets.
