To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.

When I do that, that income is included as well rather than being non-taxable for state tax purposes.

Depends on what state is involved...and you said nothing about which state is involved.

For instance...for IA, it isn't removed until you go thru the IA interview questions, where you enter the $$ from box 1.

Other states vary as to where it is dealt with...sometimes on a follow-up page just after the 1099-R Federal entries...sometimes in the state interview section, but only AFTER all the Federal entries for everything else has been filled out.

It is for Iowa and I used the transfer option from my federal return. there were no questions to answer to get that deducted. I am going to have to file an amended return to find the tax relief.

If your IA was filed and accepted already, then Yes..you'll have to amend to get it removed.

IF you haven't filed yet, you do not amend.....you just edit it and go thru all the IA Q&A again

I tried several times and still could not get it work right, so I filed it with my fed taxes (a little late). I wanted to get them in before the deadline. I looked on the Sec State's website for an amended tax return form. It looks very different from the Turbo Tax one too.

Remind me never to do this on my own again...

True....sometimes it's just better to let the professionals deal with it.

I checked my Desktop software, and in the IA interview progression, where the military $$ are removed is shown below (this was form 2014, but I just check my Online software, and the interview progression works the same way).....but you do have to go thru the full IA interview.

Thanks for your info. My version of TT did not have this in it. Once the return gets uploaded, I will do an amended return. This is so frustrating. Every year, this gets more complex. Even when they say that they are simplifying tax submittal...
