If retire during the year does your occupation change to retired since that is your 12/31 status?

The IRS only uses "occupation" for statistical purposes so you can put whatever you prefer.  It will have no effect on your tax due or refund.

The occupation entry is only used for statistical purposes, so you can use either one.  Entering Retired would be fine.
