Question

IRA box does not have an X in it

I recently rolled over an employer 401K plan in to a traditional IRA at Vanguard.  When rolling it over (at the end of 2022). they said I was required to take my RMD for 2023, so I took it and received it.  On the tax form I just got from Vanguard, they show distribution code 7 but the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is not checked.  Because of this, this distribution shows up under Pensions and Annuities on my 1040 instead of IRA distributions.  Is that correct? I would think not, but didn't know if I should just make an X in the box on the online software.

Thanks!

Was the 401K also at Vanguard?  Is the 1099R from the 401K or the IRA?  You probably had to take the RMD from the 401K before rolling over to the IRA.  Or is the 1099R for the rollover?  Then it's from the 401K.

Leave the 1099R the way it is.  Do not put an X in the little IRA box.  @dmertz

yes the 401K was at Vanguard and the 1099-R is from the 401K plan.  I assumed when they told me I had to take that RMD, it mean it was coming out of the traditional IRA that it was being rolled into.  So, I see now that it wasn't done that way. So I'll leave the box alone. :).

Thanks!

Your distribution was from the 401(k), so there should be no mark in the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box.  A 401(k) is not an IRA.
