I have two entries for box 12, one says D 20 and another says D. Do I need to enter both amounts in Turbotax and if so how?

If there is more than one row in box 12, you can simply click on Add another box 12 item under Box 12 while entering your W-2 form information.

The problem is I have a D 20 entry and another entry for D and when I add one more for D, turbotax complains about duplicate entry for D.  There is no entry for D 20 from the list that I can pick.

I assume D 20 also shows up on your paper W-2 form as well. Just ignore the 20 after D. Are there dollar amounts in both entries? Maybe you can combine them. It is for informational purposes. It should not impact your taxable income.

Yes, there are dollar amounts for both D entries. I was thinking of adding them as well, but didn't see any documentation that I could find. Thanks.

Do not add the two amounts together.  Each Code D is entered separately as shown on your W-2

IRS W-2 Instructions - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw2w3.pdf

If any elective deferrals, salary reduction amounts, or nonelective contributions under a section 457(b) plan during the year are make-up amounts under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA) for a prior year, you must enter the prior year contributions separately. Beginning with the earliest year, enter the code, the year, and the amount. For example, elective deferrals of $2,250 for 2020 and $1,250 for 2021 under USERRA under a section 401(k) plan are reported in box 12 as follows.

D 20 2250.00, D 21 1250.00. A 2022 contribution of $7,000 does not require a year designation; enter it as D 7000.00. Report the code (and year for prior year USERRA contributions) to the left of the vertical line in boxes 12a through 12d.

There is no option to choose D 20 and the previous response was "Do not combine the D and the D 20.  Thus, I am stuck with an error that cannot be corrected and am unable to finish my taxes.

any other suggestion?

You have two options, either combine the amounts and enter it in box 12 with a code of D or ignore the D 20 and do not try to enter it on box 12.

What you are entering is deferrals/contributions to your employer provided 401(k) account.  These amounts are not entered anywhere else on a tax return other than on the W-2.

Hello, I have the same issue but mine is D 21, I can't get answer on how to handle this. Turbo tax keeps telling me it's a duplicate.  The drop down menu does not have this option to choose.  HELP!!

Same answer as the post right above yours.  Either combine them or leave off the D21.  21 refers to the year 2021.

Ok. I will use my years tax return as an example. I'm filing for 2024. For box 12, d codes can't be duplicates. They each have their own money values and so it feels necessary to find a way to keep d 23 and d code for 2024. We know what 23 means- just indicates the year 2023. And we know there is no drop down option for d 23. We can only add more d codes, but no duplicates.

Some are saying just combine and opposing is saying dont combine. Instead of running around in circles- if you decide not to combine what does that mean? If you do combine them, what does that mean? Are there consequences to either choice? Nobody is answering thuroughly and it's creating more confusion.

It doesn’t matter if you combine them or leave off the D 23 amount.   It won’t affect your tax return.   Personally I would leave it off.

Fill in each line separately; you can enter as many lines as you need.  The W-2 you got from your employer will have four lines for box 12—labeled 12a, 12b, 12c, and 12d.

Any amount on a box 12 line will also have an uppercase (capital) letter code associated with it. (If there aren’t any capital letter codes in box 12, skip it and move on to box 13.)

In each box 12 line, select the capital letter code from the dropdown and enter the corresponding amount.

Important: Don't confuse the lowercase box 12 letter (for example, the a in box 12a) with the capital letters in the dropdown.  So, if your box 12a has the letter code D in it, select D (not A) from the dropdown.  And if 12a is blank, leave it blank—don't select A.

To enter multiple box 12 amounts, select +Add another box 12 item.

@DawnC   This thread is about entering two code D in box 12.   You can only enter 1 code D or it says it is a duplicate.   They get an extra code D like D 23 to indicate the year 2023.
