Is the $5,500 the excess amount of SS wages or is it the excess amount of actual SS tax withheld?
What was the calculation they (the IRS) used?
And did the two companies have different FEINs? (tax IDs)
5,500 is the excess amount held. Job A witheld 9114, Job B witheld 5558.
2 seperate FEINs.
I'm on hold with the IRS (hour 5) I'm trying to understand why. The note said:
We changed the amount clamimes as excess social security tax or tier 1 RRTA withheld on your tax return becuase you incorreectly calculated the excess amount.
There is no other data point provided on form CP11 than that.
Thank you.
Are you married? It is for each spouse separately. You alone had 2 employers and 2 W2s? For 2022 the max for Social Security is $9114.00 on $147,000 of wages. For 2022 it will be on Schedule 3 line 11 which goes to 1040 line 31. The Social Security overpayment on line 31 is included in the total refund on line 35a.
You may have to send copies of your W2s to the IRS to show you overpaid.
What is on your W2s box 3 & 4? Get a calculator and check each W2 box 3&4. Multiply box 3 x .062 and it should be box 4. The max for all box 4 combined (but only for each person) is $9,114.00. You may have entered box 4 wrong.
