I didn’t know I claim retirement savers credit. How can I change that

You can add the Retirement Saving Contributions Credit:

  • While signed in and working in TurboTax Online 2019, click on Federal in the black menu on left.
  • Click on Deduction and Credits in the upper portion of the page.
  • Scroll down and click on Retirements and Investments, Show More.
  • Choose Retirement Savings Contribution Credit by clicking on Start or Revisit.
  • Walkthrough the questions

To remove the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, you will need to delete the form.

To Delete Form 8880, Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, from TurboTax Online:

  •  In the left-hand black menu, choose Tools.
  •  Click on Delete a Form from the window that pops up.
  •  You should now see the Review Form List. Scroll down the list and click Delete on Form 8880.
  • You may get a pop up telling you additional worksheets and forms are being deleted. Approve and click delete.
  • You should come back to the Review Form List. Scroll to the bottom and click Continue with My Return.

I tried the form deletion procedures you mentioned, but it did not work. After I confirm deletion of Form 8880, the screen loaded  back to the main forms page. Form 8880 is still not deleted and the saver contribution credit still shows on my credit page.

What else can I do to delete Form 8880 from my 1040?

It sounds like there is something on your return that is generating the credit.

Please see the link below for additional information on what Form 8880 is and how the credit is generated.

Retirement Savings Credit

You can make the change in the federal section of the return in either of the following sections.

  1. First you can review your input in the Income & Expenses section of the program.
  2. Select Job (W-2)
  3. Click Edit/Add to the right of the Job (W-2)
  4. Review your input on the applicable job.  Scroll down to Box 13.  If you have marked Retirement Plan, make sure this box is checked on your W-2 as well.  If it is not, you can uncheck it.  But if the box on your W-2 is checked, leave it as it is reported on your W-2 form.

You can check the credit information in the following section.

  1. Select Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll down to All tax breaks and select Retirement and Investments
  3. Select Retirement Savings Contribution Credit
  4. Proceed to answer any questions if applicable

TurboTax will take your input and determine if you are eligible or not eligible for the credit accordingly.
