One more thing FWIW, I have my own business and contribute to a traditional SEP. My wife's W-2 form has E in box 12 because she contributes to a 403(b).
My fed returns were just accepted as well...about 11 minutes after filing.
I just checked back on my return after getting the “updating” message. Now it wants me to go back and fix box 12 Code S before I can file. Says Box 12 Code S should not be greater in value than Box 12 Code S for W-2. Problem is both my numbers match but TT is still saying it’s wrong. How frustrating.
I am getting the same error with the amounts being the same? 😡
The 'Common mistakes' listed doesn't change the fact that "S" is the correct code for Box 12 for a SIMPLE retirement plan!
Wish I had found this community discussion last week! I would have re-entered all my data in another Online Tax Service this weekend, and e-filed my return already too!
I just checked the Vanguard website, and our plan IS a SIMPLE plan, so "S" IS the correct code.
That's what I got, and the answer (of course) is ZERO; because "S" is the CORRECT code for my W-2! Federal Return FINALLY submitted!
How is zero the correct answer if you contributed to a SIMPLE IRA? All of my husbands contributions went to a SIMPLE plan so I am matching the numbers in the check box to Box 12 code S on his W-2 and it’s giving me the “this box can’t be greater than that box” message. Just genuinely asking how you came up with zero as the answer.
Aburdette0723 - the answer is ZERO, because they are asking you how much of the amount is a ROTH IRA contribution! If your W-2 was prepared correctly, because you have a SIMPLE plan; then none of the amount listed should have been for a ROTH IRA. Key words being ROTH! They are trying to determine if you are entering the code in Box 12 as “S” in error.
It's still not working for me. Mine is definitely a simple plan so S is the right code and all it does is keep saying that it can't file ir and that they are looking into it. It also now says to check back after Feb 7th. Is anyone else having this issue? I see that some people were able to get it through.
so what I’m gathering (I am not an expert) but after talking to HR, Roth contributions will eventually be able to be made along with simple contributions but that is not the case as of yet. Zero should be entered into that box because (at least my case) my contributions went to a SIMPLE IRA and NOT a simple ROTH IRA. I am put zero in the box and my return was accepted.
If we change it to D, will it not cause an issue with our W2 and what we entered not being the same. Wonder if they will kick it back or deny it?
Thank you for that....this is exactly how mine is and you answered my question. 🙂
