Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

@vpeppen

You just articulated exactly what I was thinking. Sure, I can adjust the numbers to make the "end result" appear the same, but how would that look as a defense in an audit?

IRS Agent: why did you reverse the numbers, adding a zero to one section, and reversing the negative sign on another section for 200+ option positions/entries?

Me: I was advised that IRS no longer accepts negative numbers on the cost basis portion and to adjust 200+ entries so that the software program would accept it and just e-file my returns. what's the harm? it's the same end result anyways.

IRS Agent: ...

I'm not a CPA nor an IRS agent, but I just can't imagine that conversation going over very well. Moreover, am I the only one who just prefers to file everything in a neat and tidy order? Or, does everyone just want to cram in bunch of documents and numbers to get their taxes over with?

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

use aggregation aka summary in TurboTax.

Your covered transactions without adjustments do not require Form 8949. no mailing is necessary

There is no reason to key in or import those transactions.

That's what I do and I'm done in two minutes or less.

It helps to avoid wash sales.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

Thank you for the tip!  Where do you choose aggregation in TT?  I did not see that option but TBH, I wasn't looking for it.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

fanfare and Joe-T,

Here is what TurboTax says about this:

TurboTax, Learn More, next to “I’ll enter a summary for each sales category"

If you have sales identified on your statement as Box A or Box D sales, and they don't include any adjustments to the gain/loss (e.g. a Disallowed Wash Sale amount), then you should simply enter a summary for these sales. You'll only need to enter the total sales proceeds, total cost basis, and sales category.

For sales that aren't identified as Box A or Box D sales, or that require adjustments, you have a choice to make. If you choose to enter summary totals for these sales, then you'll be required to mail in a statement with specific information about each individual sale. Otherwise, you can just enter each sale one at a time in TurboTax, and you won't have to mail anything in.

Here's a tip that might help: you can report individual sales as well as summaries for the same account. So let's say you have an actively traded account with 500 stock sales that are all Box A or Box D sales. Only 3 of the sales require any adjustments. In this case, you can report the 3 sales that require adjustments individually. Then you can report all the remaining sales by entering two sales summaries, one for all the Box A sales that don't require adjustments and one for all the Box D sales that don't require adjustments. By entering just 5 sales, you've covered all 500 sales and don't need to mail in any additional info.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

I had this issue last year, and they released a Turbo Tax version that had fixed it, I was able to reimport the 1099 forms and have some operations with negative values in the proceeds field.

However, this year I'm facing the same issue. Waiting for Turbo Tax to release a new version to correct it.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

I spoke yesterday for 1hour and 35 minutes by phone with a very nice lady with the TurboTax helpline about this issue. She tried to reach several people within the Intuit organization. She got, in the beginning, the same information from somebody in the department that since 2020 no negative amounts in the purchase box were allowed and that you should contact your brokerage to ask for a corrected 1099. I mentioned "the 2020instructions for 1099-B" from the IRS website, which is the guide brokerages use to prepare the 1099-B, where it clearly states that a loss should be reported as a negative amount in the proceeds box and that, therefore, there is no way the brokerages will provide a 1099-B according to the TurboTax rules. Then, someone there informed her that you have to upgrade to TurboTax Premier. She agreed with me, that this is very unlikely to work: The Deluxe version telling you that it is wrong, while the Premier version tells you that it is OK. Ultimately, somebody messaged her that an investigation was being done on this issue and provided her with the Investigation Number. No timeline was provided. The lady agreed with me that it might move much faster in the pipeline if the brokerages would contact Intuit about this. So, it would help if more people call their brokerage to complain about the fact that TurboTax claims the data on the 1099-B is wrong.

I was promised that I will get an e-mail as soon as the issue is solved.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

Not true about being required to upgrade to Premier. I have premier and get the same error. I'm manually sending in the amendment form (1040-x) so I don't get a letter from the IRS. TT chooses to print a negative sign (-) instead of the IRS instructed parenthesis () on the printed forms. I had to go in with a PDF editor to modify all the negative entries. At least the proceeds and basis now line up with the 1099-B. Such a terrible experience for only a few lines of negative options proceeds.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

Hey @ReneeM7122,

Turbotax does not allow the parentheses to be added in the adjustments screen, they are automatically removed by the software.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

Thanks to everyone who commented in this thread - very helpful to know that I am not the only one struggling on this. I'd like to add that E*TRADE is reporting the same way as the other brokerages previously mentioned. Seems to be a TT issue - very surprising considering they had the same issue last year. Why wouldn't they keep the fix? I find it strange...

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

You can add Etrade to the list of brokers who also report this way.  Its time for TT to get with the program and fix their software.  Etrade puts ($XXX.xx) in the proceeds and $0.00 in the cost basis.  This was done for all short options I made and lost money on.  I have combed through all 91 of my stock sales and can confirm that they were imported from Etrade exactly like they read on my 1099-B.

I could do some adjusting but I shouldn't have to.  I worry like others on here, that seems like a good way to trigger an audit.  TT please fix!!  I don't want to switch to another platform but I will if I have too!!!

Side thought: Maybe intuit should spend less money on lobbying and more money on software development....

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

Today's update fixed the problem!

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

so negative proceeds are now accepted and we can e file?

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

There is no reason why you could not. Only if TurboTax's error check shows errors you can't e-file. It does not show errors anymore for negative proceeds. So you can e-file if there are no other errors.

Can I enter a negative amount for proceeds (Box 1d) on my 1099-B?

Thanks for the update.

Does the figures in Schedule D  (Total Proceeds, total cost Bases and Net gains/loss) match the 1099B now ?

Thanks !
