backdoor Roth AFTER filing 2024 tax return

Hi, I made a $7000 Traditional IRA contribution in Feb 2025, and characterized it against my 2024 taxes.  I then filed my return.  2 weeks later (today), I went in and did a backdoor Roth with that $$.  An 8606 was included in my filed return, but it did not include the backdoor Roth action.  Do I need to amend my return or simply fill out another 8606 and send it to the IRS reflecting the conversion for the 2024 tax year?

NO the movement into the Roth happened in 2025 and you report it on your 2025 tax return.

If If I characterize the contribution against 2024, why doesn’t the conversion also go against 2024 if it happens before 15 April?

You have no 2024 1099-R, you will have a 2025 1099-R

"why doesn’t the conversion also go against 2024 if it happens before 15 April?"

Because distributions, including Roth conversions, are reportable on the tax return for the year in which the distribution occurs.  Roth conversions are made in a particular year, not for a particular year.
