My pension was fully taxable last year and nothing is different this year, but the system is deeming it non-taxable. Why would it change?

On the Form 1099-R you received for the pension, is there an amount in box 2a for being taxable?

What is the code in box 7?

Hi, thanks for helping. There is no amount in box 2a. Box 7 has a 7.

If there is not an amount in box 2a, is one of the boxes in 2b checked?  If so, which one.

Taxable amount not determined is checked.

Curious.  You say your prior year pensions were fully taxable.  Then more than likely on those Form 1099-R's there was a taxable amount in box 2a.  Did you change plan administrators for the your pension?  If not, it would seen that your 1099-R is not correct.

The 1099R was the same for both years. That’s why it confused me. There has been nothing in 2a on either of them and no plan administrator change.

After you complete the Form 1099-R the program takes you through several screens.  On the screen labeled Describe the Taxable Amount, select Yes, the amount in box 2a was used as the taxable amount.

It takes me through situations (where non apply) and then to the simplified method used last year page, then verifies the info transferred from there. That’s all I get. I don’t see the part you are referring to at all.

I am going to page one of our pension and retirement plan experts to see if they can assist.  It may be some time before they reply back.

@dmertz I could use your expertise on this issue.
