Multiple IRA RMD and actually distributed total amounts are not properly calculated

I have several 1099-Rs. The  Totals of RMDs and actual distributions are not properly calculated. As a result, form 5329-T was generated with applicable tax due to total RMD wasn't reached (line 52a and 53a). In fact, my total  distribution even higher than total RMD. I found witch 1099-R wasn't included into calculation. It was 1099-R that have RMD smaller than actually distributed amount. Rest of 1099-Rs have revers situation, distributions are smaller than RMDs.

I compare with previous, 2023 TurboTax return. Everything good there. Is it a bug or something changed inn the Tax rules ?

Currently in the TurboTax program, when you satisfied 100% of your RMD’s by taking more than the RMD from one (or more) accounts and less than the RMD from one (or more) accounts, you need to make some adjustments in your entries.

  • When entering your 1099-R’s, as you walk through the RMD questions, DO NOT enter an RMD amount greater than the distribution amount.  If the RMD for that account is larger than the distribution, then use the distribution amount as the RMD for that 1099-R and add the difference to the RMD for the 1099-R for the account that you took less than the RMD from.

Multiple IRA RMD and actually distributed total amounts are not properly calculated

Well, it's still not fixed!!!

TT Premier Desktop

I have 3 IRA accounts.

One I took the whole required minimum distribution.

Second is an Annuity and I took 2x the minimum distribution.

Third I took NO RMD distribution and the Annuity RMD will more than cover this.

SO WHAT DO I DO??
Desktop Premier only gives me a Penalty.

This happens when I go thru the Add another 1099-R after doing the first 2. In previous years I did not report the IRA that I did not take a distribution from (I can't take one due to the nature of the investment).

Multiple IRA RMD and actually distributed total amounts are not properly calculated

Please follow these steps:

  1. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
  2. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” and enter your first 1099-R
  3. On the "Required Minimum Distribution" screen enter RMD for this account
  4. On the "How much of This Distribution Applied to your December 31, 2024 RMD" screen select "The entire distribution applied…"  / or select "Some of this distribution…" and enter the RMD amount
  5. On the "Your 1099-R Entries" screen add the second 1099-R for the IRA annuity
  6. On the "Required Minimum Distribution" screen enter RMD for this account
  7. On the "How much of This Distribution Applied to your December 31, 2024 RMD" screen select "The entire distribution applied…"  / or select "Some of this distribution…" and enter the RMD amount (if this distribution includes RMD for other IRA accounts then you included the amount here)
  8. On the "Your 1099-R Entries" screen click "Continue"
  9. On the "Did You Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" screen select "An IRA..."
  10. On the "Total RMD for all other IRAs" screen enter the RMD from your other IRAs (where you didn't take a distribution from).
