I don't understand the statement "RMD total not distributed". It seems to be holding up my progress toward getting my filing completed.

I don't understand the statement "RMD total not distributed". It seems to be holding up my progress toward getting my filing completed.

The statement "RMD total not distributed" likely refers to Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from retirement accounts like IRAs or 401(k)s. If you entered a 1099-R and see this message, it means you need to verify that you've taken the correct RMD amount.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Check Your 1099-R: Go back to the income tab in TurboTax, click on the 1099-R entry, and edit it. Look for any RMD-related information. To go back to 1099R
    1. Log into TurboTax and click this link.
  2. Re-enter the 1099-R: It might be easier to delete the 1099-R entry and re-enter it to ensure all information is correct.
  3. Verify RMD Status: Make sure you meet the age requirements for taking an RMD. Generally, you must start taking RMDs at age 73.
  4.  Confirm whether you took the full RMD or only part of it.

For more details, you can visit the IRS page on RMDs.

Did you get more than 1 1099R forms to cover the RMD?

Turbo Tax changed this year. When it asks about the RMD it is only asking for that one 1099R. You need to enter the amount in box 1 on that single 1099R for the RMD, not the total RMD for all. Even if they would add up to more or less. And maybe try leaving the cents off both the 1099R and the RMD questions.

Oh, is it for a Pension?  It's whatever they send you. Say all of it is the RMD. If you have a RMD requirement it will ask you if it is the RMD. Say yes and enter the amount as the RMD amount. The pension doesn't need to calculate any RMD. Anything your pension pays you is considered to be the RMD. Traditional pensions automatically fulfill the rules of an RMD. So just enter the same amount in box 1 for the RMD for each 1099R.
