Retirement tax questions
The statement "RMD total not distributed" likely refers to Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from retirement accounts like IRAs or 401(k)s. If you entered a 1099-R and see this message, it means you need to verify that you've taken the correct RMD amount.
Here’s what you can do:
- Check Your 1099-R: Go back to the income tab in TurboTax, click on the 1099-R entry, and edit it. Look for any RMD-related information. To go back to 1099R
- Log into TurboTax and click this link.
- Re-enter the 1099-R: It might be easier to delete the 1099-R entry and re-enter it to ensure all information is correct.
- Verify RMD Status: Make sure you meet the age requirements for taking an RMD. Generally, you must start taking RMDs at age 73.
- Confirm whether you took the full RMD or only part of it.
For more details, you can visit the IRS page on RMDs.
