You file a 2021 tax return and enter all of the information from your SSA1099, including any tax that was withheld from your SS. Social Security sends out your SSA1099 in January or early February.
Do not try to enter your SSA1099 or RR1099RB as a W-2. Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.
You can use TurboTax Basic to file your simple return. After completing the personal information section, you will get to Wages and Income section where you will scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security>>Click Show More>>then click start next to Social Security. You will then enter your SSA-1099 that you received from Social Security.
After you enter your SSA-1099, continue through the program until you complete and transmit your return.
@Vanessa A Actually if you only had Social Security you do not need to use a paid version of the software. You can use the Free Edition. But check first---the Free Edition is pretty limited. Do you have any other sort of income to enter?
When you chose to “start” in the Free Edition —
Directly below the words “Free Edition” there is a blue link that says “For simple tax returns only” If you click that link it brings up this information:
You can file with TurboTax Free Edition if you have a simple tax return.*
*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only.

How does TurboTax make any money?
Customers with more complex tax situations will file with our paid TurboTax products that provide all the additional forms and guidance they need. We also offer additional benefits that go beyond filing your taxes, but they are optional and are not required to file simple taxes for free. We hope that, over time, as our customers with simple returns need more capabilities as their financial situations change (for example owning a home, having a child, managing investments), they have loved our products and services so much that they will choose our paid TurboTax offerings to prepare and file their returns.
@xmasbaby0 The Basic version online is currently free, however, if a return is not filed before March 31, the version is labeled TurboTax Basic not TurboTax Free Edition. They are the same thing.
The Basic desktop version could also be used, which is not free. But, if someone prefers that version they could use it.
I see Basic Live offered for free until 3-31. I worry about users who don't notice that "fine print" and miss the requirement to file by that date---and then getting socked for the full price.
