I show I owe additional taxes. I assume it is due to the ss received but I was told by them when applied I could make up to 41k at work. pension/ss didn't count in that

how do I correct this on this online or do I cancel this application and do on paper

Another thing that confuses people about Social Security being taxed is that before you reach full retirement age, if you continue working while drawing SS, your benefits can be reduced if you earn over a certain limit. (For 2016 that limit was $15,720)  After full retirement age, no matter how much you continue to earn, your benefits are not reduced by your earnings; your employer will still have to withhold for Social Security and Medicare.  But your SS is still taxable when you have other earnings.

Social security is taxed when one half of your social security benefits plus your other gross income is more than $25,000 ($32,000 if MFJ). The income limit you are describing may be the amount of income you can make before your social security benefits are reduced if you take social security before full retirement age.

Thank you, but I am full retirement age of 66, I was born in 1950 which at the age of 66 there is no limit to what SS said to me .  Should I contact IRS to challenge or Social Security office?

What would you challenge?  Social Security benefits are taxable on a Federal Tax return if you have other income as has been answered on your posts.  There is not an upper or lower age limit for having the benefits taxable on a federal return.

I would challenge that I am at full retirement age and being taxed.  Or are you saying that even though I am of full retirement age as long as I work and make more that 25k I am taxed?

Up to 85% of your Social Security benefits can be taxable.  There is no age limit for having to pay taxes on Social Security benefits if you have other sources of income along with the SS benefits.  When you have other income such as earnings from continuing to work, investment income, pensions, etc. up to 85% of your SS can be taxable.
