Filing form 5329 for a missed 2018 RMD received in late 2019

I didn't take my RMD for 2018 until Sept. 2019. (I am 73 years old.)  I filed my 1040 for tax year 2018 in early 2019. Do I now file the year-2018 form 5329 by itself, by mail? Or should I attach it to the year-2019 1040 when I file that (and can this be done in Turbotax)? I have no unrelated reason to amend my 2018 return; do I need to amend it in some way and send form 5329 with that?

Filing form 5329 for a missed 2018 RMD received in late 2019

You should have filed form 5329 with your 2018 tax return, which was the year the RMD was not taken.

Since you did not file form 5329 in 2018 and have no other reason to amend your 2018 tax return, you'll have to file form 5329 for 2018 by itself.

You file Form 5329 for 2018 by itself, by mail. Don't forget to sign it at the bottom of page 2. You have to use the 2018 version of Form 5329. You do not amend your 2018 tax return.

Filing form 5329 for a missed 2018 RMD received in late 2019

@linsker  Nevermind my question about when you took your 2018 RMD. I didn't notice that in the other thread it was someone else who took it in February. I have deleted the mistaken part of my reply above.

Filing form 5329 for a missed 2018 RMD received in late 2019

I missed my 2018 RMD and I took it in January of 2019. I composed a letter requesting a waiver for the penalty. I was going to file a 5329 for 2019 with a copy of the RMD request form. I was going to put "FC" on line 54 of the 5329 and mail it in with my return. My wife and I are filing standard deduction and we are wondering if this is the proper way to proceed.

Thanks for any help

Jim

I will tell you that worked for me with my dad's return. We took his out in January and had a really, really good excuse. There are several ways to handle this and this method worked for me. Good luck!

@33catman66

This has nothing to do with your 2019 tax return (other than a taxable amount).

You want to file the 2018 Form 5329.

See Form 5329 where it states you can file the form by itself.

Regarding Line 55 you can attach an explanation that you took action to take the RMD in 2019.

The notation is RC (reasonable cause), not FC

PS

In my opinion an amended return 1040X is called for.

1040X part III is where the explanation goes.
