Please try entering something in box 16 and then deleting the entry again and see if you can continue. If this doesn't work try to enter $0 for box 16 state distribution.
kind-of disagree with this.
Many forms do not contain anything in box 16, but NY, in particular, insists on it.
In all cases I know of, a zero in box 16 will lead to errors in certain situations.
Normally, the value of box 2a would be entered into box 16 if box 2a contains a real $$ value.
If box 2a is empty, or undetermined, then the Federally-taxable amount of box 1 is entered as box 16 (unless the person made after-tax contributions to that type of retirement fund, that $$ amount is just box 1)
So, even if I live in a state (Texas) where there is no State Income Tax, I need to enter the amount from my 1099-R Box 16 "State Distribution" into TurboTax 2022 anyway?? Thanks in advance!
*EDIT*
I think this question is unnecessary...but I don't know how to remove it. Thanks anyway!
Well most of us here would have you just leave boxes 14,15,16 entirely blank if you lived in TX all of year 2022.
The only time it might make a difference, is if you were in a situation where you moved your home from, or to another state (which had an income tax) during the year, then having a state breakdown could be helpful as to which state the $$ belonged to.
Thank you so much for the answer. Boxes 14, 15, and 17-19 were all blank. Since I read comments here about not being able to leave Box 16 blank, I didn't test whether I could or not. Your explanation makes perfect sense to me.
