I have TurboTax premier. I am filing a joint return.
In the 1099-R section, after all the forms are entered, TurboTax asked the question "Did XXX Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" to the primary tax payer. In this case the answer is "None ..". However, the same question was NOT posted to the spouse who also has 1099-R's. In our case, the spouse has two IRA accounts but make all required distributions for both accounts from one. So the other account does not have a 1099-R.
The description says that TurboTax needs to collect information about qualified accounts that have RMD but no distributions.

When you are entering income on a joint return, every income entry screen will either have a spot with both spouse’s names there, or when you click to enter a W-2, 1099R, etc. it will ask you by name which spouse it is for. You do not have to wait for the software to “ask” you for your spouse’s income. Go to the screens to enter your spouse’s W-2’s, 1099’s, etc. just like you did for your own income. Then look for your spouse’s name there.
I think you misunderstood. The question is not a per form question. It came after all the 1099-R forms are entered. The preceding question is "Any nondeductible contributions to XXX's IRA?" and that was posted first to the primary tax payer and then to the spouse. (XXX being the respective names).
I found the answer when I came across another post regarding RMD for IRA without 1099-R. That was a post by FiberGlass72 and the answer was by DanaB27. I also updated this Subject to be more precise.
DanaB27 answer leads me to Form 5329.
1. This form did not exist in my return till this point. I searched for it and it showed two: 5329-T and 5329-S, one for the primary payer and one for the spouse.
2. On the 5329-S, the "Additional Retirement Accounts Smart Worksheet" section was prefilled with known data. I entered the RMD in "Non-inherited IRAs/Additional/RMD for account" column. This figure was automatically inserted in "Undistributed RMD" column and the Total Undistributed RMD showed 0 since the distribution from the other account covered both.
3. When I went back to Step-by-Step, the question for the spouse showed up this time.
4. Now the 5329-S also appeared in the list of forms in my return but not 5329-T.
My conclusion is that the "Step-by-Step" process has an error in case of a joint return. It only posts the question "Did XXX Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" to the primary tax payer but not to the spouse before the 5329 forms are created.
