Retirement tax questions
I found the answer when I came across another post regarding RMD for IRA without 1099-R. That was a post by FiberGlass72 and the answer was by DanaB27. I also updated this Subject to be more precise.
DanaB27 answer leads me to Form 5329.
1. This form did not exist in my return till this point. I searched for it and it showed two: 5329-T and 5329-S, one for the primary payer and one for the spouse.
2. On the 5329-S, the "Additional Retirement Accounts Smart Worksheet" section was prefilled with known data. I entered the RMD in "Non-inherited IRAs/Additional/RMD for account" column. This figure was automatically inserted in "Undistributed RMD" column and the Total Undistributed RMD showed 0 since the distribution from the other account covered both.
3. When I went back to Step-by-Step, the question for the spouse showed up this time.
4. Now the 5329-S also appeared in the list of forms in my return but not 5329-T.
My conclusion is that the "Step-by-Step" process has an error in case of a joint return. It only posts the question "Did XXX Miss a Required Distribution From Any Retirement Accounts?" to the primary tax payer but not to the spouse before the 5329 forms are created.
