Qualifying Dependent

My son left to the Army in September of 2024. He made less than 10,000. Can I add him as a dependent on my 2024 taxes?

Qualifying Dependent

How old is your son?

You can claim him as dependent if he meets all requirements listed below:

Qualifying child:

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
  • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply). The child is considered to have lived with the taxpayer during periods of time when either the child or the taxpayer is temporarily absent due to illness, education, business, vacation, military service, institutionalized care for a child who is permanently and totally disabled, or incarceration.
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying Dependent

It depends, since he turned 19 last year, the only way he'd qualify as your dependent is if he was a full-time student and if he didn't provide more than half of his own support. As MayaD mentioned, he'd have to meet all the requirements of a qualifying child.
