I'm filing on behalf of my elderly parents. My father has always been primary on their joint return. This year because of his declining health and mental capacity, I made the mistake of listing my mother first. IRS rejected the e-file because they couldn't verify the AGI and/or PIN against last year's return where my father was primary/first. They don't have an IRS-assigned PIN, just the one I can enter in TurboTax (Desktop) when signing. I have verified the AGI is correct.   I switched them back so my father is first, after learning that even after he passes, he should always listed first if I want to e-file. But IRS keeps rejecting the return. The error message in Turbo Tax says "The IRS couldn't confirm XXXX's identity", where XXXX is still my mother even after I switched back to my father primary and listed first, which I've verified in Forms view on the 1040SR and in the printed pdf.    What can I do to get this e-file to go through?

Instead of entering the sale details directly within the Schedule E "Rental Property" section, report it under Wages & Income > Business Items > Sale of Business Property.  This section allows you to manually enter the Asset Basis (your original cost + improvements) and the Total Prior Depreciation separately. TurboTax will then correctly subtract the depreciation from your higher cost basis.

Here are some remedies you could try to resolve this:   Go to the banking screen, click on the routing number field, and hold down the Backspace/Delete key on your Mac completely to remove all data. Manually re-type the routing number—do not copy and paste. If this does not work: Switch to "Forms Mode" on your Mac Open the "Info Wks" Locate the banking section If the box looks yellow or contains characters like 123456789RoutingNumber, delete everything in that box Re-type only the 9-digit routing number @ElSatrapa

If you took a distribution from an IRA before age 59 1/2, then TurboTax will automatically generate a 5329, except in the case that the distribution code is '2'.   In the 1099-R interview, there should be a section about exceptions to the penalty for early distributions. The IRS rules allow you to withdraw up to $10,000 from an IRA penalty free for the "first" purchase of a home. "First" means that you haven't owned a home in the prior two years.

Hello Community,   I have used TurboTax Desktop to complete my return and the printed version only includes a single form 4562 whereas in the forms schema within the tool I can see four of them - one per each of the qualified business units I have. Can anybody advise on what to do to get all 4 forms 4562 included in the final printout?   Thanks in advance, Jaime.

When filing as Married Filing Jointly all income and expenses for the both of you are entered on only one tax return.  If you want your spouse to enter their income and expenses, then they have to use the account that you created for Married Filing Jointly.
@lowebowski We have sent you an email
It’s telling me that there is one thing that needs to be reviewed and fixed, but when I tap the fix button I keep getting an error message that says try again.

No.   You can only use one account and one user ID for your joint tax return.   How to start a new joint return   You will not be able to merge two previous TT account to start your new joint return.  You can transfer ONE of your 2024 returns into a new return, so choose the most complicated one.  The other spouse’s information needs to be entered manually.  The first name you enter will be the “primary” taxpayer——and in subsequent years you need to keep the names in that order—do not try to change the order of the names.     When you enter the primary spouse’s information in My Info, you have to answer the question "Were you married?"  If you click the button for Married, then a drop down will appear that asks, "Do you want to file this return together with your spouse?"  Then you choose YES to file a joint return.  You enter your spouse's information into My Info.  Whenever you are entering income information there should then be a spot for you and for your spouse's income information.  WATCH for the names as you enter income on the screens.  Or when you click to add income it will prompt you to choose which spouse had the income.   When you prepare a joint return you include all the information for both spouses on the SAME tax return.  Include all of your personal information, all of your income from every source, all dependents (if any), all credits and deductions for both of you.  You get ONE refund with both names on it.   And…keep a record of how to access the “old” account for your spouse in case a need comes up to print it or find information from it.  TT will save it online for seven years,

We may be able to report this experience to our development team now, but it is unlikely an update will be released before the filing deadline.   In order to research this further, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2025" file. If you would be willing to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information, please follow these instructions:    In TurboTax Desktop, open your return and go to Online in the TurboTax header. (On a Mac computer, choose Share or Help.) Choose Send Tax File to Agent. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click Send on this screen and wait for the Token number to appear. Reply to this thread with a screenshot of your Token number (this avoids Community filters for numbers with a dash) and tag (@) the Expert requesting the token from you. Please include any additional States that are part of your return - this is VERY important.
No, if you are filing jointly, you will have to use the same account.  You will have to share the same user ID and Password if you want to combine the incomes on the joint return..
