@ clsbell1942  wrote:  " PRESIDENT CUT TAX ON SS FOR SR where is it that the president said no tax on ss"   President Trump wanted "no tax on Social Security" included in his OBBBA as relief for Seniors, but that was voted down in the Senate as well as the other items in the OBBBA. So the OBBBA had to be passed through a process called budget reconciliation. That budget reconciliation process specifically prohibits any changes to Social Security (part of the Byrd Rule). So instead, a lesser workaround was to lessen the pain a bit with a "senior bonus" called the "Enhanced Senior Deduction". It does not equate to full Social Security tax refief for many people, but it does help lower the overall tax burden of seniors and got around the Byrd Rule. It provides some extra spending money, especially for married couples. Hopefully, additional tax relief for Social Security can be in future legislation if the Senate doesn't obstruct again.

Here are the FAQ instructions and general information for amending your prior-year tax return using TurboTax Desktop:   If you want to change or correct some info on a prior-year tax return after you've filed, you may need to amend your return. Here are some things to know before you begin: You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment. Make sure you really need to amend. Wait until your return has been accepted (or mailed, if paper-filing). Use the same TurboTax account you used to file your original return. Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return. Be sure to only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending. The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due. Any changes you make to amend your federal return will automatically be transferred over to your state return. TurboTax Desktop Open the TurboTax Desktop software for the year you're amending. For example, you must amend your 2024 return in the 2024 version of TurboTax. Under Need to Amend a Filed Return?, select Amend a Filed Return. Select Amend for the return you need to amend. If the return you need doesn’t appear as an option, select Find a Tax File to find and load the return. On the Do you need to change anything else screen, select Update next to the info you need to change. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return. Don’t forget to select Save As (or Duplicate on Mac) from the File menu when you save a copy of your amended return. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed. Give the file a different name from the original, like [tax year]_amended_tax_return_Smith. Note: you'll first select File then New Tax Return to get to the "Need to Amend a Filed Return?" prompt.

If TurboTax is asking you for a second payment, it may be because you are using a different username/account. Some people have multiple accounts and it's easy to get them confused. Also, you may have inadvertently created another TurboTax account. Make sure you are using the correct TurboTax account.   If you tried editing your return after you paid but before you submitted it, that may cause this.   A duplicate charge could be a "pending" authorization and not the final charge.   Check your bank statement to verify if you were charged twice by TurboTax.   Also try logging out and clearing your cache and cookies and then logging back in. ‌Please click here for instructions on how to clear your cache. Nothing about Social Security has changed. It can still be taxable.  There is a new Enhanced Senior Deduction if you are 65 or older.   It is automatic based on your age. It is not part of your Standard Deduction. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b with any other sch 1-A amounts. Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. For Single the deduction starts to phase out at 75,000 and maxes out at 175,000 For Joint the deductions starts to phase out at 150,000 and maxes out at 250,000 If you are married you have to file a Joint return And your SSN must be VALID for employment. My son was a low income earner last year. We rolled over 529 money (he is the beneficiary) to his Roth IRA. Turbotax desktop is allowing the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit since he is not a college student. Isn't this considered a "rollover" and therefore the credit shouldn't apply?    Thanks
