No need to guess or waste time trying to import past year data.   You cannot do it.  Period.   Data for 2022 has to be entered by hand.

You don't go directly to a 1040X.  You do the amending process.     If your first return was efiled and Accepted or you mailed it, then you need to do an Amended tax return to correct or add new info. You need to wait for the original return to be fully processed and you get the first refund or paid the tax due. Then you can Amend. Be sure to save a copy of your original return before you start the amended return. The Amended return will overwrite the original return. How to Amend the current year https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-federal-tax-return-current-year/L7eS6o1qh_US_en_US?uid=lfunevhk   If you don't see a button for Need to Amend a Filed Return? on your home screen then you can get to it here. Go to: Federal Taxes -or- Personal (for H&B) Other Tax Situations last section, Other Tax Forms Amend A Return - Click the Start or Update button

Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend. (If you do not save it as a pdf, the amended return will overwrite the original, and the original will be lost forever)     See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return -   CURRENT YEAR https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-federal-tax-return-current-year/L7eS6o1qh_US_en_US?uid=lfunevhk   Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.     You can watch for information here: https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1

Note that my old TDA Tax statements dating back to 2015 (9 years ago) are all accessible in PDF format on Charles Schwab's website.  Storage space doesn't seem to be a concern for them -- thus that led me to thinking that the information for import, which is essentially the same as what's in the PDFs, has not been purged (at least not for space reasons). The consolidated 1099 forms are identified by a (unique) Document ID. And I could no longer retrieve this old one via Turbotax import (IIRC, I did succeed doing this before in a prior year).   I use  the Windows desktop version of TT, and I also tried turning off the Defender Firewall as suggested in https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/tdameritrade-1099-import-issues/00/3544581 but that didn't work for me.  Please give it a try if you also use Windows.   Wonder if anyone has the "official word" from either Intuit or TD Ameritrade/Schwab stating whether this should work for prior years or not, so that we don't have to keep guessing or waste time trying?

That's not exactly true. I remember that I did this import for a previous year's 1099s in the past without issues.  But since the merger with Schwab, this doesn't seem to work anymore.

Because taking the withdrawal may push you into a higher tax bracket when you add it to your total income.  You will get a 1099R at the end of the year to enter into your return.  The Gross amount shows up on 1040 line 5a and the taxable amount on 5b. The withholding will show up on 1040 line 25b. It has to break out and show the 10% penalty separately on your return (schedule 2 line 8 which goes to 1040 line 23). Then you get credit for all the withholding taken out on 1040 line 25b.   Now what about a IRA?  You have 60 days to roll over some of it to a IRA.   That will reduce the tax on it so if the withholding was on the full amount you may get a refund on your tax return.  When you enter the 1099R it will ask what you did with it.  You can enter the amount you rolled over to IRA.

Information flows from the federal return to the state return, so even if you are not itemizing deductions on your federal return, enter the charity donations into the federal software so that it will flow to the AZ return.   Federal>Deductions and Credits>Charitable Donations>Donations to Charity       The following states allow you to itemize deductions on just the state return: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, and Wisconsin,
That makes more sense. The fidelity rep I spoke with couldn’t explain when I ask, so I was confused. Thanks for clarifying

The amount that Fidelity withholds will only be an estimate of the tax owed for the money you take from the 401k, just like the amount withheld from your paychecks is an estimated amount withheld by your employer.   If you are younger than 59 1/2 there is an early withdrawal penalty of 10% and ordinary income tax for the money you take from the retirement account.  You will receive a 1099R for that at tax time which must be entered on your tax return.      When you enter all of your income and all of the tax withheld, the software reconciles those amounts to calculate whether you get a refund or owe more.

Thx - it seems like phone support will be the best option. I e-filed my '22 returns with TurboTax Online in '23. Not the free version - deluxe, possibly? I still had the option online to e-file amendments for federal and certain states (a couple others required mailed amendments). I did that. Some of them were accepted. NJ was not. Intuit sent me a notice when the NJ amended return was rejected to say that I had the ability to fix the amended return online. But in fact there is nowhere to do that. So I will contact support.
Received Notice of additional assessment from CA FTB for previous year tax return.

I have a 401k from a previous job that’s just sitting there. I already have another 401k going through my current job. Rather than rolling my old one into a new one, I’m considering withdrawing the funds. My car died this year and I had to get a new one and take out a loan for it. After taxes and the penalty fee, I should have enough to payoff my loan and have several thousand left over to open an Ira account, but fidelity told me I may still have to pay more when I file my taxes, even though they said they’ll withhold and send however much is owed for the taxes and penalty fee when I withdraw it. If I pay the taxes and fee separately how does taking the money out impact filing and potentially mean I owe more when I file?

(that's the sum of your AGI, added to your Tax-Exempt Interest).   The SSA gets that data from the tax return you file with the IRS.  (Not sure how much other data they share)

My website does not support quicken, and I already have all of my data in Excel. I cannot find a good source of documentation for the TXF. All I am finding is about importing STOCKS, but that is not what I am trying to do. I have been referred to https://easytxf.com/#instructions, but that just takes me to the landing page to start importing and then the steps only lists stock transaction fields. I am finding a lot of CSV to TXF converters and I can EXPORT to CSV, but I am not sure of what the fields are what the layout. My spreadsheet does have total, but it depends on the sheets.  And good sites to learn more about TXF files? I can create anything, but I have to know what I am creating. Thanks!
Does TurboTax calculate MAGI for IRMAA and if yes then where can I locate?

@bpeled    A link to get hold of TTX Customer support is below for TurboTax consumer products (Weekdays only at this time of year): How do I contact TurboTax? ___________________ But...we are confused as to how you were able to E-file amended 2022 tax returns at this time.....at least using the TurboTax Consumer software. E-filing 2022 now, certainly might be possible for professional tax preparers with professional software. 1)  So.... are you using some other professional software?   This site is not a conversation website for professional's. 2) or... are you using the TurboTax consumer version of "Desktop" 2022-labelled software you installed on your computer (Windows or MAC) to file your 2022 data and amendment...if so: ........2a) exactly when were the original E-filings accepted, and ........2b) when did you attempt to E-file the amended forms? 3)  OR...did you just recently used the Online-browser-based software to E-file 2022?   and then the amended 2022 forms sometime after January of 2025???? (And which version...Free...Deluxe...Premium??),   ....IF you used the current "Online" software that is up and running now... then you really messed up, because the TurboTax Online software for 2022 was taken down in late October of 2023....the Online software that is being used NOW (and since January of 2025) can only be used for 2024 tax filings.
