You can’t file an Amended return for the penalty on 2210. Do you have another reason to amend?

Why can't I enter (and therefore deduct) other educational expenses (e.g. room & board) in 2025 TurboTax??? I have a 529 QTP, and due to this issue, TurboTax is causing my taxable income to be incorrectly high, and I'm getting hit by the extra 10% tax on QTP income (not offset by qualified expenses). Further, I can't even manually enter into the various TurboTax forms. I can see others have this issue (it's not user error - I've used TT for a long time, but questioning that going forward). FRUSTRATING!!! When might this actually be fixed (ideally correctly, but if not, take the control off the manual entries)???

I think Turbotax 2025 (desktop) is asking me questions to populate the Form 8606: Roth IRAS What were your Roth IRA contributions prior to 2025? When I click on "Learn More" the explanation (which I cannot copy and paste from for some reason) goes into the definition of Roth conversions. It seems to be that if Turbotax is asking for Roth IRA contributions, then that needs to be defined, not Roth IRA conversions. According to the IRS, a Roth contribution is an after-tax contribution made to a Roth IRA. I have never made a Roth contribution. I have done several Roth conversions starting in 2019. So do I answer "0" to the question since I never have made Roth contributions?

It depends. If you could explain if this is for your 1098-T or 1099-Q for a more specific response to help. For either document, although there is a section to enter an EIN, it doesn't appear to need an entry. For TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop: Search > Type 1098t or 1099q > Click the Jump to link and then review your entries Try to finish this process then do the following: Clear your cache Try clearing the cookies and cache. It handles many issues that seem nonsensical on a regular basis with online activity. Close your tax return first. Watch to be sure you are selecting 'all time' as example. Do not use selections like 'last hour' for those browsers that give you options. How to clear your cache Once this is complete open your return and try again. If you are using TurboTax Desktop, save your return, then at the top select Online, then Check for updates. Lastly, it may be worth a try to create a new account and then do not select that field if the previous steps did not allow you to move forward.

For Medical you can enter it into any box or put the whole total in any box. Only the total goes to Schedule A. The separate boxes are only to help you not forget any expenses.

IRS says: When filing 1040xX, ignore any penalty on form 1040. Do not try to include any new or changed penalty. IRS will let you know if you owe anything. @BL_TaxLearning

Without seeing your return, it sounds like it could be a typo, or you have additional non-salary income that increased your total income (unrelated to your W-2). Revisit the W-2 entry to double check your input. The amount from Box 1 of your W-2 will be entered on your 1040, line 1a.
If you also had "Other Income," that amount comes from Schedule 1 and shows income like business income, farming, gambling income etc.
You can preview your 1040 by navigating to Tax Tools on the left of your screen, choose Tools, then View Tax Summary. On the left of the screen, select Preview my 1040.

Where did you see the $7,781? What is on your federal 1040 line 35a? That is your IRS refund. At the end Turbo Tax just shows you the net federal and state combined. But that is only for your info. You will still get the full refund and you need to pay a tax due. Federal and state are completely separate. And you can never have the tax due from one deducted from a refund.

@panamax If you e-filed the original 2025 tax return, then in most cases you should be able e-file the 2025 amended return, Form 1040-X.

I'm using desktop TT Deluxe for Windows and entering itemized deductions, in particular medical expenses. I can enter everything except for doctors expenses. I cannot enter anything in the box. The cursor won't even allow me to click in the box. This has been a problem for at least 2 previous years. I know I've reported it, and yet it remains unfixed. Why? Jim

Hi. I wanted to get clarification on what to enter Nonresident Income Allocations. I live in Maryland. I have 2 incomes: a W2 job in Maryland and a North Carolina Rental Property. I am assuming I leave the wages tips box blank because that was my Maryland income and only complete the rental royalty income box as my total North Carolina rental property income which would be $13,556 after expenses. Thank you in advance.

It appears that the distribution may have been coded incorrectly, leading the transaction to appear on your Schedule 1, rather than Line 5a and Line 5b of your Form 1040. To properly record your Form 1099-R that was for a cashed in life insurance contract, do the following:
First, I recommend deleting your Form 1099-R and the IRA Information Worksheet, before re-entering the 1099-R:
In TurboTax Desktop, go to Forms Mode, Click on Form 1099-R and select Delete Form at the bottom left, then click IRA Info Wks and Delete Form
In TurboTax Online, go to Tax Tools on the right hand panel inside of TurboTax
Click on the down arrow and scroll down to Tools
Click on Tools and select Delete a form from the menu items that appear in the Tool Center
Click on the trash can icon to the right of IRA Information Worksheet and then Form 1099-R
Next, re-enter the Form 1099-R:
Go to Income on the left panel within your TurboTax account
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security and click on the down arrow to the right
Click Start to the right of IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
Click the +Add a 1099-R box
Click the "Enter a different way" box
Click the "Type it in myself" box
Click on the box that pertains to your type of 1099-R (typically the first box), Continue
Next, you will see, "Enter your 1099-R provider's info", complete that, then Continue
Next, you will see "Enter your 1099-R details from _". Enter the information from the original Form 1099-R that you received
Ensure the details from your Form 1099-R are correct, including any amount in Box 5
Ensure the correct distribution Code was used in Box 7, and that the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is unchecked, then Continue
On the, "What kind of retirement plan do you have?" screen, select Non-qualified plan, Continue
To verify the information is correct:
On the left panel, click on the down arrow to open more options
You may have to scroll down a little to view the Tools option below
Click on Tools, then View Tax Summary from Tools Center (Usually the first option)
Select Preview my 1040 from the left hand panel, located above Tax tools
Scroll down to Line 5a to confirm the Box 1 amount is there, and the taxable gain amount should appear on Line 5b
