Thank you so much for being thoughtful enough to share your detailed interaction with the IRS so far with the others here who may benefit from this. I am very concerned about the current anti-climate ideology adding additional scrutiny in the name of rooting out potential or suspected fraud to those who are making energy efficient appliance tax credit claims on their returns. I will say that I submitted my return via TT Mac Desktop e-file during the first week of February. I called last week and spoke to a person that said there was a name issue that had since been corrected and my return was sent back through for processing. It has now been a month since I filed and still no update other than “Return Not Processed”. Naturally, this induces the taxpayer with additional concern with what is going on. I didn’t have any issue with my tax return filing process 2 years ago when I claimed a credit for installing solar panels on my roof. I am wondering has anyone in this group of people that have claimed energy efficient tax credits for this tax filing year has had their e-filed return fully processed so far? I would hope that Intuit would find such customer tax filing experiences helpful for their tax software information to customers as well.

Yes, the 1099-Q is not entered since it covered qualified education expenses.
The 1098-T will be entered once by the parent and once by the student in very different ways. The parent is claiming $4k paid while the student is claiming $4k income - as long as the scholarship allows the use for living expenses and is not dedicated to tuition only. There could be other expenses as well, books, supplies, etc.
Parent:
Enter the 1098-T basic information
For the box entries, only box 1 is entered $4,000
this maximizes your credit.
For the student, determine if kiddie tax comes into play and if your student needs to file a return.

Did you file a joint return in a prior year that he owed the balance for? If so, the IRS took it out of your return because it is looked at as a joint liability.
If it was not a joint liability, then you can file an injured spouse form, form 8379, to claim a refund of the amount they kept for your spouse. Since you already filed your return, you will fill out the form and mail it to the same IRS center where you mailed your original return.
If you live in a community property state, the rules are slightly different as his debt can be considered your debt so the ability to claim a refund will be based on your state rules. If you lived in a community property state and they took your refund for a return that was filed separately you can file form 8857 Innocent Spouse. (Edited 3/4/26 @ 4:39AM PST)

You have three options.
1. File as married filing separately. Leave the spouse and their income off your return.
2. If you provide care in your home for a qualifying dependent, you can possibly file as head of household.
3. File a joint return with your spouse. You must include all their world-wide income and pay US tax on it, but you can usually claim a deduction or credit for taxes paid to their home country that should offset some or all of the US tax.

Hi David, Do you have any guidance when the plan servicer refuses to amend the 1099R? Backstory... my husband's role was eliminated March of last year. He did go back to work for the same employer after being off work for ~6 weeks. However, payroll did not resume loan payments until the loan was already defaulted in the July timeframe. Since the loan payments were being withheld from his paycheck from that point on, it was quite a surprise when we received a 1099R for the full defaulted loan amount (with code L in box 7). Through research, I came across the QPLO, which I believe this qualifies for as it was due to termination. However, Empower, the servicer of his 401(k), has been no help whatsoever. They have no intention of complying with the QPLO guidelines per the IRS. We have called multiple times and the "backoffice" will not have anything to do with a QPLO. They are telling us we should handle with an accountant. It's been very frustrating and we are at a loss in how to proceed. The tax liability is ~$10,000. Do you have any guidance on how to handle?

Hello, For the past three years, I manually entered my tax information related to my shares in Enterprise Products Partners L.P. into TurboTax. However, just recently, I learned that instead of entering the data manually, I can download the tax package as a TXF file to my computer and import it directly into TurboTax. After importing the TXF file, I went to the Federal Taxes section in TurboTax. From there, I selected Wages & Income, then Business Items, and clicked on Schedule K-1 to input the necessary information. Under the Partnerships/LLC section (Form 1065), I clicked on Update and reviewed the relevant information for the Schedule K-1. After importing the TXF file, I noticed that there are two entries for Enterprise Products Partners L.P.—one for last year and the other for the current year, even though I only expected one entry. I verified the data from the file I just imported, and everything was entered correctly. However, when I compared it with the old file from last year, I noticed that the old file includes Report Carryovers—Regular Tax, Report Other AMT Carryovers, and Report Qualified Business Income (QBI) Carryovers, but the new file does not contain this information. My question is whether I should delete the old file and start using the new file going forward, so I can simplify the process and just import the data each year. I want to make sure that by using the new file, I won’t miss any important carryover details that could affect my taxes. Alternatively, should I continue using the old file to ensure those carryovers are properly accounted for? Thank you

If you received a CP5071 notice or a letter 5447C from the IRS, you can follow the instructions in this IRS document to verify your identity and tax return.
