If you used TurboTax Desktop to prepare your tax return for 2024 and you can't find your missing 2024 TurboTax desktop files, you can search your computer for files ending in .tax2024 using File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).     TurboTax saves files in Documents\TurboTax or Documents\My Tax Returns.    Also, check your recycle bin or cloud storage. Make sure you are logged into the right Windows User Account. Some people have multiple accounts.   For additional information: How do I find my tax data file (.tax file) on my Windows computer? If you are unsure if you filed a tax return for 2024, you can check your IRS Online Account.  If you don’t already have an account on IRS.gov, you can use this link to create an online account Online account for individuals. Answer "Yes" to the question "Did you receive any lump-sum payments?" in TurboTax. This triggers a special IRS calculation known as the Lump-Sum Election, which can actually reduce your tax bill.   When you receive a lump-sum payment for a prior year (like the 2024 windfall repayment received in 2025), the IRS requires the full amount to be reported in the year you received the check. However, they allow you to use the "lump-sum election" method to prevent that large payment from pushing you into a higher tax bracket.   TurboTax uses the total from Box 3 as your starting point. When you select "Yes," the software will ask you to break down how much of that Box 3 amount was for 2024. It then recalculates your 2025 tax as if that portion had been received back in 2024.   If your income was lower in 2024 than in 2025, or if the lump sum would make more of your Social Security taxable this year, this election ensures you only pay the amount of tax you would have owed if you had received the money on time.   TurboTax will run the numbers both ways—taxing it all in 2025 versus using the lump-sum election—and will automatically apply the method that results in the lowest tax for you.   To complete this section accurately, have your 2024 Tax Return handy. TurboTax will ask for: The specific portion of the 2025 payment attributed to 2024 (found in the Description of Amount in Box 3 on your SSA-1099). Your 2024 Filing Status. Your 2024 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). Any Tax-Exempt Interest you reported in 2024. Follow these steps to ensure the election is applied: In the Social Security (SSA-1099) section, enter the full amounts exactly as they appear on your 2025 form. On the screen "Did you receive any lump-sum payments for 2024 or earlier?", select Yes. Enter 2024 as the year the payment was for. Enter the amount designated for 2024 from your form's description. Follow the prompts to enter your 2024 return data. Once finished, you can verify the result by viewing your 1040 (select Tax Tools > Tools > View Tax Summary > Preview my 1040). You will see a checkbox on Line 6c indicating the Lump-Sum Election was used.

Yeah.....as long as the DC W-2 income is your only income from DC, then on the Personal Info page, you would NOT indicate you worked in another state (DC).   Some folks living in MD and working in DC....actually DO need to indicate they had income in DC ...for instance...if they owned a rental property in DC that they received income from, or if they had Self Employment 1099-NEC income for working in DC...then those $$ are taxable by DC first...before MD.

You would not include Unemployment as California income.  California does not tax unemployment benefits so it would not be taxed.    See Part-year resident and nonresident.   If you physically worked in Minnesota, your wages would also not be California source income.  As a Minnesota resident, you would be required to report and pay taxes on all income.  Please review Do I need to file a nonresident return for an out-of-state employer?

It might kelp if you provided the reject code or message. 2024 AGI comes from line 11 of the return. If you filed after 10/15, try 0. If you amended try line 11 from the original return. This all assumes you successfully file 2024. Sometimes nothing works, and the return will have to be mailed.

You will be able to access the 2024 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.       Start a 2025  return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.   Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2024  returns is now permanently closed.    Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2024 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/finish-prior-year-return-started-turbotax-online/L9Oe4M90A_US_en_US?uid=m68tffpe   If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.   They are available from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number     If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Hello,   I contributed $2,600 to my Roth IRA and then found out later I am over the income limit to make any contribution to a Roth IRA.  I need to remove the excess contribution plus NIA.  I plan on removing the excess prior to the tax deadline.  My question is do I complete the 1099R form on my 2025 tax return even though I will not receive the 1099R form until 2026? If I can fill out the form now, can you please provide what the answers would be to the form questions?  Do I use code P and J or 8 and J?   Example: Excess contribution: $2,600 Gain: $886.47   Thank you

If your income from a 1099-NEC doesn't show up after entry, try these troubleshooting steps in TurboTax: 1. Complete Business Details: After entering the 1099-NEC, finish answering all questions related to your self-employment business. 2. Review Schedule C Section: Make sure you have started or updated the Business Income and Expense (Schedule C) section where the 1099-NEC income should be reported. 3. Check for Other Self-Employed Income Entry: If you received income not reported on a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC, enter it under Other self-employed income.   @katykins1008

@RobertB4444  Thanks for the quick feedback. The difference is $321 less tax in TY2025, so worth the little bit of extra work. I appreciate all of the work that you and others do to help clarify tax items here. If there are any NJ State Division  of Taxation people reading this, I think it would be helpful to post these types of explanations on the website.  Why? My Mom is 90 years old, there is no way she would be able to do this. The 'safe approach' and some websites suggested just putting the total refunds as income.  The $321 savings is about 10% of the total benefit she is getting from NJ Property Tax relief.
