Here is how to deem part of your pell grant taxable.
Go to Education: Go to Federal > Deductions & Credits > Education > Expenses and Scholarships (1098-T).
In the interview, when you reach a screen labeled Did you have any of these common situations in 2025, check received a scholarship, grant, or other aid
Then after you enter your 1098 T and reach a summary screen, press continue.
There should be a screen that is labeled if you had any of these situations for your scholarship and grant. Here check you used it for room and board.
Now put the amount that you wish to be taxed.
This amount will now be placed on Line 8R on Schedule 1 in your return and will appear as schlorship income on that form.

No the amount on line 35a is the amount I was told I was going to be refunded which was the full 2,893, and they didn’t deduct anything last minute according to the 1040. I’ve seen similar ppl have this issue with turbo tax before, was there any solution? Theres a little over $1400 missing. Also I have not received my state yet. Just the federal tax return.

TurboTax does this calculation behind the scenes and does not provide a way to view the calculation. For most people MAGI for the purpose of a Roth contribution is AGI minus the amount of any conversions to a Roth IRA. In less common cases there are a few additions to AGI. The entire calculation, which TurboTax implements correctly, is described here: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p590a#en_US_2025_publink1000230985 For TurboTax to treat the code-7 distribution as a Roth conversion, you must indicate that you moved the money to another retirement account and that you converted the entire amount to Roth.

So, in the end I think I found my own solution. I read up on how the IRS defines self employment, earned income and scholarship/fellowships and and based on such, am comfortable in what I intend to to. I am not sure Turbo Tax is asking the right questions to be honest (though it did in the online version, not software that I could see), because I was able to generate an 8615 worksheet which allows you to enter the child's other earned income, which this stipend clearly was, and then the problem disappears (no longer shows up as unearned income). This then does not impose the kiddie tax. In the end, the child still owes less than the parent loses by claiming them (since they CAN b claimed, even if they aren't they don't get the AOC for example) so that's probably the route we will take. Thanks.

No, but the large updates tend to come out at the end of the day on the day that has been announced. So it may be a good idea to wait until tomorrow to try.

If you received a "Success" message but your data hasn't appeared in TurboTax, it is likely due to recent browser security updates regarding Local Network Access.
To fix this you need to allow TurboTax to securely retrieve your data through your browser settings:
Locate the View Site Information icon (the "tune" or "lock" icon) on the far left of your address bar, just before the URL.
Find Local Network Access in the dropdown menu.
Toggle the switch to ON.
Refresh the page and attempt your import again.
If permissions aren't the issue, one of the following factors may be at play:
Brokerage Delays: While most forms arrive by January 31, many brokerages delay Consolidated 1099s (like the 1099-B) until mid-February due to complex reporting requirements.
Availability: Your brokerage must specifically "release" the import file to TurboTax. If it isn’t ready, we recommend checking back.
Connection Blocks: Active VPNs or aggressive Anti-Virus software can occasionally block the import feature between your bank and TurboTax. Try disabling them temporarily or switching to a different browser.

The Form 1040-X for amending a 2025 federal tax return is estimated to be available in TurboTax on 02/25/2026
You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return. If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again. If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

Go back to My Info on the left side of the online program screen. Edit the dependent and carefully check your answers to the questions.
Note - A child born in 2025 is deemed to have lived in your home for the entire year.
Make sure you select them as your Child, that you selected that they lived in your home for the Whole Year, temporary absence for education is deemed living in your home. That they did NOT provide over one-half of their own support (You Did), that you indicated there was no one else in the household providing support to them, and that you did NOT check the box labeled Not valid for employment in the Social Security number section.
If all your answers are correct then delete them as a dependent and re-enter.

If you have already removed the Roth contribution (plus the earnings on the contribution) from your account, you can remove the entry in TurboTax for the Roth contribution as there is no tax consequence for removing the contribution prior to the filing deadline.
You should report the earnings on the contribution this year. You can create a 1099-R in TurboTax and report the earnings you received in Box 1 and box 2a. You will enter codes P and J for box 7. After you enter that information, you will get a screen asking for the year of the 1099-R - it will be for 2026. These earnings will not be subject to the 10% penalty, so in the "These situations may lower your tax bill", you can enter the earnings as "Corrective distributions made before the due date of return". On a later screen called "Explain the return of contribution" you can put in a statement that you were not eligible for a Roth IRA contributions for 2025 and that you removed the contribution and earnings.
