UPDATE: Thank you Turbotax for fixing the software to include explanation of my missed RMD & your calculations.  I was able to file electronically and my tax due, did not include the penalty. I was able to give a five line explanation for my late RMD, save it & have it appear in my filing. Though, I was thankful that I had decided to use the desktop version & follow the other instructions given. Thank you community! -------------------- Turbotax, will you please fix this soon!?! I have wasted most of my Sunday trying to make your software work the way it should! It sounds like you are telling me I need to mail in my return.  I have a 1099-R for 1 distribution & one that wasn't completed (no 1099-R)

If you already started a return and are in the wrong edition, we can tell you how to start over in Free Edition.   Otherwise, use that direct link to Free Edition that @rjs provided above.   Note: TurboTax Free Edition is for customers who are filing simple Form 1040 Returns only (no schedules except for Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Student Loan Interest).  If you need additional forms such as Schedule 1, 2, or 3, or attachments, it will ask you to upgrade to a different TurboTax product.

The 1040 does remove the amount from the 1099-R. Intuit needs to fix the breakdown of income in the "Why do I owe $X" overview in Federal review. My "Why do I owe $X" overview is showing the 1099-R amount as included (which should not be included, and is correctly excluded on the 1040).   But I now see another error where the "Other income from Schedule 1" in "Why do I owe $X" doesn't match the 1040 Line 8 amount (Additional Income from Schedule 1 Line 10).   I think that mismatch on 1040 Line 8/Schedule 1, Line 10 is an issue related to not receiving all the prompts to offset money drawn from a 529 plan. I can't figure out why the "Why do I owe $X" overview is giving a correct answer and the 1040 Line 8 is wrong. I suspect it has something to do with my inability to get to a prompt that asked for qualified expenses that are not paid to the university and not on the 1098-T. Any tips on how to force a prompt to enter eduction expenses not included in a 1098-T?

Currently using the "do it yourself" online version, at this point willing to upgrade to assisted filing, but can't figure that out either... This software is really frustrating.
That would not be TurboTax you are remembering.  Connecting to your bank account and being able to categorize expenses is something you can do in QuickBooks, but not TurboTax.
A fix is in the works but updates have been scarce.

Yes, it will be apparent that a 2024 8606 that is signed by you and mailed to the IRS is a form that you'd like added to your record.     If you'd prefer, you certainly can add a letter.  You could include a brief cover letter with your mailing to help the IRS process your form. Your letter should clearly state your full name, current address, and Social Security number at the top. Explain that you are sending a standalone Form 8606 for the 2024 tax year to report IRA contributions that were left off your original return.    Since you are writing the letter, you could also request they waive the $50 late penalty. To avoid the penalty, you should explain in your own words that you didn’t realize a separate form was necessary because your tax total stayed the same, but you are proactively fixing the error now to ensure your future retirement records are correct. It is important to specifically use the phrase "reasonable cause" in your explanation to let the IRS know you made an honest mistake in good faith and are requesting they waive the $50 fee.

After you enter some information about the donation you will come to a screen that asks whether you got a Form 1098-C. When you answer Yes it will ask you to enter information from the 1098-C.

This is a seperate issue from the $17K cap. In OK, you have to go either/or, this is for itemization with a cap. If you are under the cap ($17K) then the other form (Property Tax + SIT ) kicks in. The 2025 TT program is apparently  still using $10K for the cap on the proration of SIT if you go down the under $17K with itemization after taking out the Medical Expense. They are trying (apparently) to limit charitable contributions. My return is in the later catagory, and the TT program is prorating the 2025 SIT against the old $10K SALT cap, not the higher SALT cap of $40K. This results in a significanly lower SIT allowance (which raises my actual 2025 SIT) I am above last years $10K cap, but  under the alternate calculation's $17K cap. If I use the actual 2025 SIT witholding (not the one you calculate in the program), it makes a $124 dollar difference in my actual Oklahoma SIT taxes, and will ultimaltely require a amended return. This appears to me to be a programing error, as noted above in the original post? Please advise.

OMG @intuit makes it impossible to report a bug and there are a ton this year.  I guess Q/A is no longer part of their development process and they don't give a **bleep** about whether their product works...  I'm close to asking for a refund and going to HR Block!!!! BTW, the Net "Capital Gains" screen in the Tax Penalty section is actually tied to 1040 line 3a for Qualified Dividends.  So if you enter your Cap Gains/Losses there, your return will be WRONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"ended up not being able to file my taxes..."      Sorry you had trouble.   I'm curious as to what the roadblock was that prevented you from filing the return.  If there is a problem with efiling that can't be resolved, it's possible to print the return, sign, date, and file by mail.    If you tell this community what the roadblock was, we may still be able to help you efile it.  But don't post any personal info in this public Internet forum.
