The IRS computer will only want the totals to match, they will not look for the stock sales.

If there were no taxes withheld, that state code won't matter. You can enter the form as it is, TurboTax won't generate a tax form for that state and only use your resident state for any calculations. That is by default, so you don't need to make any changes to the form. Had there been state tax withheld for that state, you would have to file to get them back, but since no tax was withheld, no forms will generate.
Make sure they correct your address so it doesn't happen in the future.

I am considering Private Equity investments, but I fear that the K1s will be complex and as a Do it yourself filer, I feel I will have to rely on a CPA going forward just for this single investment into a PE fund. The fund could take 7-10 years to harvest the investments. On querying online, the below is what I get i.e. Turbo tax is unable to handle complex K1s, and specifically as it says below "TurboTax is notoriously bad at tracking "Prior Year Basis" across multiple years of K-1s.". Can someone comment on any version of Turbotax being able to import K1 Pdfs and being able to handle complex K1s. And can I, as an individual who does taxes for family members, get access to Proconnect? Technically, TurboTax can handle footnotes, but it does not "read" them for you. It treats them like a manual data-entry project. While the PE fund may send you a 50-page PDF, TurboTax will only ask you for about 5–10 specific numbers buried within those pages. Here is the reality of using TurboTax for a complex Private Equity K-1: 1. The "Box 20" Gauntlet When you enter your K-1, you will eventually hit Box 20. This is the "Pandora’s Box" of private equity taxes. The Codes: You will see codes like Z (Section 199A), AA (W-2 Wages), or AH (Other Information). The Prompt: Once you check those boxes, TurboTax will trigger a special interview screen that says: "We need some information about your 199A income." * The Search: This is where you have to open your 50-page PDF, hit Ctrl+F (Find), and search for "Statement A" or "Section 199A." You will then manually type in the "Qualified Business Income," "W-2 Wages," and "UBIA" numbers into TurboTax. 2. Where TurboTax Struggles (The "Danger Zone") While it can handle the basic QBI (Qualified Business Income) data, TurboTax often falls short in three areas common to PE funds: Multi-State Filings: If the footnotes show you earned $50 in 15 different states, TurboTax will require you to manually create 15 different state tax returns. At ~$50 per state for the software, the "convenience" cost often exceeds the price of a CPA. Basis Tracking: If you are an employee making yearly $20k contributions, you must track your "Tax Basis" (the total amount you've invested minus losses/distributions). TurboTax is notoriously bad at tracking "Prior Year Basis" across multiple years of K-1s. If you lose your computer or switch software, that data is often lost, leading to massive tax overpayments when you eventually sell. Section 163(j) Limitations: Many PE funds have "excess business interest expense." TurboTax often cannot handle the specific forms (Form 8990) required to carry these losses forward unless you use the "Desktop" versionand manually enter "Forms Mode." 3. Online vs. Desktop Version If you are going to do this yourself, do not use TurboTax Online. TurboTax Desktop (Premier or Home & Business) is the only way to handle this. It has a "Forms Mode" that allows you to see the actual IRS worksheet. You can right-click on boxes to see where the data is pulling from. The Online version hides the math behind a "simplified" curtain that makes it almost impossible to troubleshoot if the footnotes don't match the summary. The "Verdict" Your time has a high hourly value. Year 1: You can probably DIY it because there will be very little activity. Year 3+: Once the fund starts selling companies, the footnotes will become a nightmare. My Recommendation: Use TurboTax for Year 1 just to see the process. By Year 2 or 3, hire a CPA who uses ProConnect or GoSystem—software designed to "import" these 50-page PDFs directly from the PE firm's digital portal.

My concern is what is submitted on the IRS Form 5695 as the QMID. If it is actually "L7Q6" on the form will the IRS see it as invalid during their processing and either delay or terminate processing of your return? If the "L7Q6" is simply used to pass the submission validation but the proper "I7Q6" QMIN fi retained on the IRS Form 5695 then that would give me more confidence that change to successfully transmit my filing wouldn't delay my return being processed. That said, this being an issue seen with customer submissions of Turbo Tax electronic filings should be a very high concern and priority for Intuit. If others can take their Turbo Tax prepared returns and successfully electronically file them with FreeTaxUSA then there is obviously an issue somewhere in the Turbo Tax e-filing process flow. It would certainly be helpful for customers to know if Intuit sees this as a known issue and could give customers some information or alternatives to work around this issue to e-file their returns.

Code 2 and code 7 are treated the same (no early-distribution penalty), so just enter the Form 1099-R as received.

@jr11984a I see that you have two different threads in the user forum, and in both of them you are entering details and amounts that should go on your tax return. Are you confused about completing your tax return? This user forum is not where you put your information. We can help if you have questions, but we do not prepare your tax return and do not need all of your details here. Please do not post anything more personal like Social Security numbers etc. here.
You have self-employment income. In your other thread you say you were a ride share driver. You will be paying self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.

If the payer did not mark the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box and box 7 does not have code J, T or Q, the distribution is not from an IRA and the distributions must instead appear on lines 5a/b.

The 1099-R shows a state I have not lived in for 4 years. No taxes were taken and the taxable amount shown is below the filing threshold for the state. I have contacted the bank (Chase BTW) and they refuse to correct it. Should I: 1. Input the 1099-R into TurboTax as is with the wrong state. 2. Input the 1099-R with the correct state and if so, do I need to do any other documentation. 3. Chose to submit a substitute 1099-R and then also do the additional form 4852.

If you just need to value your donations for your 2025 tax return, there's a Goodwill Donation Guide and a Donation Guide from Salvation Army you may find useful.

I resubmitted a few hours ago, still did not get the declaration page, and my NY State return was just accepted! I did not delete and start again, I just started over from the "Fix my return" button like last time, but this time it worked. Hopefully this works for other people as well! And I'm glad I didn't listen to the various TurboTax customer support agents who told me a) this wasn't a problem, b) my return wasn't rejected, c) the problem was the was the inflation bug, d) this was a NY IRS problem not a TurboTax problem, and e) I'd need to file by mail because it couldn't be fixed. Hopefully the coordination among the TurboTax response staff improves, I've never seen a mess like this one before.

I was having the same problem - page one of the K-1s appeared blank in the pdf file. Note that my return passed all the error checks with this discrepancy present - not good! Note also that Form 1065 Schedule K-1 only became available from the IRS on January 28. Perhaps their digital form is corrupt? Someone mentioned loading Acrobat Reader, so I checked, and it was not installed on my new computer. I downloaded the free reader from Adobe and the data now appears, but with an error message for that page. This error must be preventing other readers from being able to display the page. Turbo Tax needs to acknowledge this as their problem and fix it.

Thanks again for the quick response. Yes, I created the "ghost" 1099-R for the Excess ROTH contribution removal when I e-filed the original tax return in March 2025 with distribution codes J & P. I therefore will disregard the 1099-R that I received 2 weeks ago as the numbers are identical to the 1099-R I created in March 2025.

The response says to use a search function. Where is the search function? When I try to search - in other words, I click on Search and the magnifying glass, I get a totally useless "digital assistant" (AI chat that is never helpful). After going around and around, I entered this question:"Is there a search function on TurboTax?" The response: "Okay, I searched TurboTax Help for related answers and found the following: [list of unrelated topics]."
