Nobody is talking about having forms ready for filing. Did you not read my post? Of course, the software isn't ready to be used for filing, and some sections of the interview aren't quite done at this point, but TurboTax has ALWAYS been useful for doing December estimates. I've been doing that for 30 years. This year is different. The product they sell in November is claimed to be already up-to-date with the latest tax changes. And it isn't.

All income and tax withheld for both you and your deceased spouse should be reported on your joint return. Amend your return to reflect that.

Well, no one from my company told me that or explained it during the retirement process. So here I sit with twice the amount of money in the 401k above the amount of the remaining 401k loans. When I look at the site for the company, the only option available is a hardship withdrawal.
If you are no longer employed by the plan sponsor, you can withdraw any amount you want any time for any reason, and just pay income tax. (If you are under age 55, you will also pay a 10% penalty for early withdrawal.) The limitation of withdrawals to hardships, only applies when you are still employed by the plan sponsor. You can also do a tax-free rollover of the funds to an IRA that you can open at any bank or broker or financial advisor you trust. That may give you more investment options.
Regarding the loan, if it is more than 60 days, it should automatically be converted to an offset deemed distribution.
Call the plan trustee (fidelity, or whoever) rather than the employer.

My husband died in 2024 and I just discovered that he had sold his cryptocurrencies before he died. I was able to get his 1099-B from a cryptocurrency platform showing total proceeds and total costs. I also got his form 1099-R from an IRA custodian for 2024 showing federal income tax withheld. Which parts that I need to amend/update on my return?

@FortFun wrote: ....Just received an email from TT with the subject "The future of tax filing is Online." The email includes discount links for using online vs. desktop. I would hope they're going to give discounts and I mean HEFTY ones. There are folks using desktop versions of TurboTax instead of online for the sole reason that they can e-file up to 5 returns AND prepare unlimited returns for paper filing. Intuit needs to accommodate those customers.

You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2025 only. Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and 2024 is permanently closed.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Yes, dental procedures are a valid medical expense.
Health care insurance premiums, including dental and vision insurance premiums, and other medical expenses that you paid with out of pocket funds and were not reimbursed are an eligible medical expense that you can deduct using Schedule A for itemized deductions. However, only your total medical expenses that are greater than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can be deducted. Your total itemized deductions reported on Form 1040 Schedule A must be greater than the standard deduction for your filing status to have any tax benefit.
