My husband received a 1099-B for the sale of Incentive Units (I think they are similar to RSUs).  In the beginning of the sales info section of the 1099-B, it asks "what type of investment did you sell?" and has stock (non-employee), cryptocurrency, mutual fund/index fund/ETF, bond, or options as possible answers.  Would the sale of Incentive Units be classified as an option?  I think that's the correct answer since employee "stock" is not an answer.   Thank you!

Yes.  If she had even $400 of self-employment income she is required to file a tax return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare, although she will not owe any "ordinary" income tax.   Is she your dependent?   MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return.  He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages from boxes 2 or 17 (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.  (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!) If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.     You might also want to use free software from the IRS Free File versions: https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/
For installation and software billing issues you can contact the TurboTax Support Phone Number
Yes.   She's required to file a tax return as her self-employed income is over $400.

It sounds like his 1095-A may be incorrect, if he did pay ACA premiums throughout the year and had less income than last year.    If you believe that you entered his 1095-A correctly into TurboTax (with the SLCSP amount in Column B)  you could reach out to the Marketplace to verify the correct amounts for the 1095-A.    If you're using TurboTax Online, be sure to clear your Cache and Cookies first.    Here's more info on How is the Premium Tax Credit Calculated and Form 8962.    @rtonkinson
Thanks. Starting again from  https://login.legalplans.com/register  did the trick. I didn't even have to start over.

Why would you want to do that?   That will not get you around the IRS five federal e-file limit.   And you cannot download three versions of the desktop software to the same computer.   Any version of the desktop software can be used to prepare and e-file up to five federal returns and the state returns that go with them (state e-file fee is extra).   If you have more than five returns to fill the extra ones can be filed by mail.   You do not need three licenses; it would just be a waste of money.

Follow these steps: First - Save a copy of your original file by downloading or printing a copy for your records.   Second - You will need to file an amended return with federal. If you file state taxes, amend your state as well. See How do I amend my federal tax return for this year? and I need to amend my state return.   Third - Enter the income. Income code 15 is retirement income. Exemption code 15 is not subject to withholding. This means you only have income to enter and no foreign tax paid on it.   For a Code 15, you will report this income in the Retirement Income section using a Substitute 1099 R.   Select Federal Taxes Select Show More at Retirement Income Select Start or Update at IRA, 401k, Pension Plan Check Yes when asked if you had this type of income Check I'll Type It Myself When asked for EIN /TIN enter 99-9999900. Fourth - Be sure to enter the amount of refund already received as you go through the program. See it on line 18 of the 1040x.   Fifth - E-file federal and state, if possible. See Can I e-file my amended state return? If you must mail your state, be sure to sign and date. Mail with tracking and no signature required.   Sixth - make any payments due online. For the federal, Payments for your state check here.

@VR13 When I was answering your first question, I was thinking the same- I will submit as suggestion (not sure if anyone ever thought of it).  TurboTax does ask if you had other income, but it (may) be easy to sort by the property address.  (And I say "may" because of course it may or may not be when programming).

You do not use the "business" section to report your K-1.  You report that in the personal income section.     If you don't have a business that you are reporting income and expenses for on Schedule C, you can't take those deductions you mentioned as you have previously.  However, you may be able to deduct unreimbursed business expenses if you are required by a partnership agreement or routine practice equal to an agreement to personally pay the expenses on behalf of the business. No deduction can be claimed if the terms of a partnership agreement/LLC operating agreement provide for reimbursement but the owner fails to submit a claim.  You can do this by using our Turbo Tax desktop product while completing your personal return.   You must use TurboTax Desktop to take the unreimbursed partnership expenses deduction.

First, I never post to these things, I read and learn, but this seemed off, so I went and looked up the IRS pub and here are my thoughts.  Take them or leave them.   From reading the IRS publication,  I get 5 returns per software package and 10 returns per email address and/or 10 returns per phone number.    Logic would suggest,  2 TT desktop software licenses using the same TT internet account (email & phone #) should work.  It seems, via the first hand experience expressed here, that TT  (no clue how) limits everything to 5 rather than the 10 the IRS allows.    I would agree that multiple software packages installed on the same computer may cause issues, but it is very easy to switch between Microsoft product licenses, ie Office 2021 and MS365, so it shouldn't be that hard for TT to allow the use of multiple software licenses on the same computer as well. TT shouldn't make it so difficult for families to follow the IRS's rules.   Per IRS Pub 1345 Rev 10-24  page 34    IRS Pub 1345 Additional Requirements for Software Developers Participating in Online Filing A Software Developer that participates in Online Filing must also: 1. Ensure that its software package can’t be used to transmit more than five electronic returns. 2. Ensure that its software, if available for use on the Internet, can’t be used to file more than ten electronic returns from one e-mail address. The email address used to create the account with the software provider should be used when determining the number of uses. Note: It is strongly recommended that the software provider normalize email address handles (email address text excluding the domain) prior to determining how many electronically filed returns have been submitted using the same email address. Normalizing the email address can be done by applying the following text preprocessing measures. These measures are applied to remove features that can obscure that apparently-distinct email handles may resolve to the same inbox, depending on domain handling. • Remove dots (R.o.b.e.r.t -> Robert) • Ignore characters after the first plus sign (“+”) (Robert+White -> Robert) • Ignore characters after the first hyphen (“-”) (Robert-White -> Robert) 3. Ensure that its software, if available for use on the Internet, can’t be used to file more than ten electronic returns from one phone number. The phone number used to create the account with the software should be used when determining the number of uses.

Also as stated earlier, Sec. 179 can only be used to write-off "personal property", not real property. Therefore you've got to determine whether the new flooring is personal or real. New carpeting would be personal property (not real property) and therefore eligible for Sec. 179 treatment provided the taxpayer satisfies the "trade or business" requirement sec. 162 as you point out.

No. You misunderstood. The “summary” given to you by TurboTax must have confused you.  That summary just nets out the difference between a refund you are getting and an amount you owe.   Or it adds two refunds or tax “due” amounts together.     The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.     Your state tax due cannot be paid from a federal refund.   And….your federal tax due cannot be paid from a state refund.     Neither refund can be used to pay the amount due to the other one.   If you owe tax due, you have to pay it yourself by the filing deadline on April 15, 2025.      If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.    https://www.irs.gov/payments     https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-payments/help/how-can-i-pay-my-federal-taxes/00/26212     https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-payments/help/how-do-i-pay-my-irs-tax-due-with-a-check-or-money-order/00/26403      To apply for a payment plan with the IRS   Apply Online for a Payment Plan     You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0
