TurboTax identifies you as a part-year resident based on the information you entered in your Personal Info (Federal) profile or if you have multiple state returns in your account.
Common Reasons for This Status
The "Lived in Another State" Box is Checked: In the My Info or Personal Info section, there is a box that asks if you "lived in another state" during the year. If this is checked, TurboTax automatically triggers a part-year resident status for the states involved.
W-2 State Coding: If a W-2 has multiple states listed in Box 15, the software may assume you moved between those states during the year.
Data Carryover: If you indicated you lived in another state last year, that information may have transferred over into your current return.
How to Fix the Residency Status
Update Personal Info:
Go to My Info (or Personal Info) on the left menu.
Click Edit next to your name.
Find the question "Tell us the state(s) you lived in".
Ensure your Resident State as of December 31 is correct and uncheck the box for "I lived in another state" if it does not apply.
Delete the State Return: Sometimes changes in the Personal Info section do not fully update the state return.
Go to State Taxes > Your State Returns.
Click the trash can icon to delete the state return that is showing the wrong status.
Restart the state interview; the software will pull the updated (correct) info from your Personal Info section.
Clear Browser Cache: If the status persists after you've made changes, log out, clear your browser's cache and cookies, and log back in.

I just reprocessed it and paid the fee twice. Maybe that is what Turbo Tax wanted to begin with. Since the corruption happened after an Update, like everyone else. Thank you though!

I inherited a house in 2024. Started renting from Jan-Jun 2025, sold Aug 2025. Received 1099S from property mgmt company. Can I report 1099S under investments (crypto, mutual funds etc)? And then enter rental income in rental income section? (I attempted it under sale of business property but some of the questions were impossible for me to answer, and resulted in what seemed like an oversized refund.)

You may be able to claim him as a dependent under the Qualifying Relative rules if he meets all the requirements.
To be a Qualifying Relative -
1. The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer. A child is not the qualifying child of any other taxpayer if the child's parent (or any other person for whom the child is defined as a qualifying child) is not required to file an income tax return or files an income tax return only to get a refund on income tax withheld. 2. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household. 3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $5,200 (social security does not count) in 2025 4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year. 5. The person must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S., Canada, or Mexico resident for some part of the year. 6. The person must not file a joint return with their spouse with the following exception - You can claim a person as a dependent who files a joint return if that person and that person’s spouse file the joint return only to claim a refund of income tax withheld or estimated tax paid.

If you lived in two states as a part-year resident and earned income in each state only while living there, you are not being double taxed. However, TurboTax may still ask about an Other Jurisdiction Credit (OJC)—also known as the "Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State"—due to how it processes multi-state income or because of specific software triggers. If any of your income (like a W-2) isn't clearly split by date or location, TurboTax may assume both states are trying to tax the same dollar. The "Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State" is the standard mechanism to prevent double taxation. TurboTax often defaults to checking for this credit whenever it sees multiple state returns in your account, just in case. Interest, dividends, or capital gains are typically taxed by your resident state on the date they are received. If you received a large dividend or sold stock while transitioning between states, TurboTax might prompt the OJC to ensure you aren't paying both states for that specific gain. If you are certain there is no overlap in taxation, you can bypass or remove the OJC request: Go back to the State Taxes section for both states. Ensure you have accurately "allocated" or "apportioned" your income so that each state only shows the wages earned while you physically lived there.
If the OJC screen keeps appearing, you may need to manually delete the credit form: TurboTax Online: Go to Tax Tools > Tools > Delete a form. Look for a form labeled "Credit for Taxes Paid" or "Resident Tax Credit" for your specific state and delete it.
Ensure your "Date of Move" in the Personal Info section is identical for both states. A gap or overlap in these dates can trick the software into thinking you were a resident of both states at the same time.
