If it was used on a student loan, it isn't taxable. The 529 is not taxable when used on eligible expenses along with qualified room and board.  IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education states that nontaxable distributions should not be entered. If it was a withdrawal and not related to anything education, review your answers. You may need to delete the form, log out and then add it back.

To find your child’s Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI), start with their Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from line 11 of Form 1040, and add back specific deductions like tax-exempt interest (line 2a), student loan interest, or foreign income. For most children, MAGI is identical to their AGI.   See this IRS webpage for more information.

The reason TurboTax may be flagging Code B as "invalid" may be because Code B is specifically for a Designated Roth Account (like a Roth 401k or Roth 403b), but it usually cannot stand alone in Box 7 (if you are under age 59 1/2 or if other conditions apply).   Code B identifies the type of account, but the IRS also wants to know the status of the distribution.  Most 1099-Rs for Roth accounts will have a second character in Box 7.   Example Codes: Code 1B: Early distribution from a Roth plan (no known exception) Code 7B: Normal distribution from a Roth plan (you are over 59 1/2) Code HB: Death/Disability/Hardship from a Roth plan. Double-check your physical form... Look very closely at Box 7.   Is there a tiny number "1" or "7" next to or above the "B"? Sometimes they are printed closely together (e.g., "B1" or "1B").   If you rolled over your Roth 401k directly to a Roth IRA, your provider might have only put "B."  However, the program wants to know if the distribution was "qualified" or "early."   If your form truly only has a "B" and nothing else, your financial institution may have made a clerical error.   Note: If your form definitely only has "B," try entering it as "1B" (if you're under 59 1/2) or "7B" (if you're over 59 1/2) to see if the subsequent questions in TurboTax allow you to clarify that it was a rollover or a qualified distribution.
Did you overcontribute in 2024 and carry over the excess to 2025? The excess in this case appears on line 2 of form 8889 as a "personal contribution" so that it can be applied to the 2025 tax year.

If you accidentally selected 'No' instead of 'Yes' in the Schedule C review section in TurboTax and now cannot change it directly, try these steps: 1. Use the Back or Edit Buttons: - Navigate back to the specific Schedule C review section. - Look for an Edit or Change button to reopen the questions. 2. Re-enter Schedule C Section: - Go to Federal Taxes > Self-Employment (Schedule C). - Choose to Edit your business information to revisit the questions. 3. Use the Search Bar: - Enter keywords like "Schedule C review" or the specific question to jump directly to that section. If none of these work, sometimes TurboTax locks answers when moving forward. In that case, you might try exiting and re-entering the Schedule C section to refresh options. Note that changes to answers in Schedule C can affect your tax calculations, so carefully review all related fields.

If the funds were received by the estate (you didn't keep the money), you may enter this as a correction to Form 1099 under Miscellaneous Income with a negative amount. If you are logged into TurboTax Online, go to Miscellaneous Income. Or go to the Wages & Income Summary page and choose Miscellaneous Income at the bottom of the list. Choose Other Reportable Income at the bottom. Add a description and the amount from the 1099 as a negative number. To confirm that this offsets the original entry, go to Tax Tools >> Tools >> View my Tax Summary.  Chose Preview My 1040 from the left column. Scroll down to Schedule 1 Line 28z.  Confirm there are two entries that net to zero.
