However, investment theft losses (like Ponzi schemes or specific profit-seeking frauds) follow different rules and are still deductible if they meet certain IRS criteria. You must report Investment Theft Losses on Form 4684, Section B (Business and Income-Producing Property).
If it's a Ponzi Scheme:
The IRS provides a "Safe Harbor" method to simplify this.
In TurboTax, use Form 4684, Section C (Page 3) to calculate the loss, which then flows to Section B.
If it's other Investment Fraud:
Report the loss on Section B, Part I of Form 4684.
These losses are generally reported as an itemized deduction on Schedule A (Line 16) but are not subject to the $100 reduction or the 10% AGI floor.
The standard interview often fails to handle these specialized investment thefts correctly. You may need to use Forms Mode (available only in the Desktop/Download version) to enter the data directly on the worksheet.
Open Form 4684: In Desktop, click the Forms icon (top right) and find "Form 4684" or the "Casualty & Theft Worksheet".
Select Investment Property: On the worksheet, identify the property as "Income-producing" or check the box for Ponzi-type investment if applicable.
Check for Worthless Stock: If the loss was simply a decline in market value due to fraud at a public company (like accounting scandals), it is NOT a theft loss. It must be reported as a worthless security on Schedule D.
Why it Might Not Be Calculating
If your total itemized deductions (including the theft loss) are lower than your Standard Deduction, TurboTax will ignore the loss because it wouldn't lower your tax bill anyway.
If you accidentally entered it in the "Personal Use Property" section (Section A), the software will block it unless you also provide a FEMA Disaster Declaration Number.

Also, you may have to file your state taxes:
Do I need to file an extension for my personal state taxes?
Remember, an extension gives you more time to prepare your taxes, but it doesn't extend the time to pay your taxes. If you have an indication that you will owe taxes, you should make the payment by the original due date of the tax return to avoid additional interest and penalties.

You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.
Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed. Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.
What is the rejection code or rejection message?
If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2024 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

If your capital gain number appears doubled in the Federal Income section of TurboTax, it is very likely due to the way the software displays both your total capital gains and separately lists short-term and long-term gains, which can sometimes look like duplication. Additionally, TurboTax may be showing both the gross proceeds and the gains, or it could be including adjustments, such as wash sales or capital loss carryovers. You potentially could review your entries in the Investment Income section to ensure all transactions are correctly entered and no duplicates exist. Also, verify your entries on Form 8949 and Schedule D where capital gains are reported.

I've been having the exact same issue with TurboTax since last year. It happened for the first time last year (after 9 years of e-filing with TurboTax) and then again just now. I e-filed an extension via FreeFillableForms (obviously using my spouse's birthday) and it was accepted. There must be a bug with TurboTax. It's annoying because I had to paper file last year (and like you had to pay $15 for the state efiling fee) and the same thing has happened this year.

Many users have multiple accounts. Yo might have an "old" account that is generating those emails. If you already filed and know that your return was accepted, just ignore the emails.
